analog ps3 stick usage with APB on lr-mame2003

I've been trying to get the left analog stick on a ps3 controller mapped for APB running under lr-mame2003 (the game doesn't run under mame4all).
When I go into the tab menu and 'options for this game', there's a 'P1 Pedal' control, but when I try and remap it to the y axis on the left stick, it doesn't detect the left stick.
I also tried going into the Select-X options and noticed that the default option was RetroPad and not RetroPad w/Analog, so I changed it and saved, but this also doesn't seem to make any difference.
Is the Pedal on APB digital on/off and not analog, is this why I can't map it to an analog stick, or is there something else I'm missing?
