@edmaul69 or do you mean the one in my roadcase cocktail cabinet? My build uses a Sony.

@caver01 i apologize. I meant to ask @esmith13 about the one he was showing pics of. But i do like those dells. I used to have one. I had gotten several in an auction and sold them off but kept one for myself. Mame was great on it with the rotation.

@dankcushions when I'm in a game that I want to play in vertical position, I am searching for the Retroarch menu setting that I can change once I start the game, then after it rotates, I'll rotate my monitor. That's what I'm searching for.

the tate mode option is something that you (someone with a rotatable monitor) leaves on for all games. then any vertical game is played alone the length of your monitor, and you rotate the monitor. the rest of the games play normal.

mame knows what games are vertical or not.

Great, thanks. Hats why I was Gathering

I'm using a 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio, 56 cm (22") diagonal VIS (viewable image size) and 1680x1050 maximum resolution Dell E2210 monitor in this self-contained, cabinet-less setup that I just threw together yesterday:

I just need to enable TATE apparently. I'll look into it. MAME only, not fba

TATE mode makes it so that per rom config files are not necessary any longer To have games rotate to portrait mode, correct ?

*solved (for my situation, at least)

Finally nailed the portrait mode rotation mess.

I took the zip file of cfg files (mentioned above) copied them in my arcade folder, alongside my MAME roms, changed vide_allow_rotate to FALSE under MAME-libretro settings under advanced Retroarch config, and that was it!

Now the games that are supposed to run in portrait mode start automatically rotated.

The nice thing is, if I don't want to play in portrait mode (depending on what monitor I'm using), I can just hotkey into the Retroarch settings in when the game starts and then change rotation to 0 and put the ratio to 3:4 and I'm back to playing a vertical game on a portrait monitor (not pictured, but this is the basic view you get when playing a portrait game on a landscape monitor).

Also, when In Portrait mode, you can also change the aspect ratios in Retroarch settings to eliminate the black bars (sometimes with no noticeable stretch).

Just wanted to share. I can finally use my custom Retropie image on ANY monitor and have the settings work perfectly. No TATE commands needed or used

Plus, another great part is that when I exit the game, the settings default back to the config file, so no worries about messing anything up.

                      Thanks for listening

**shit, I just learned that a simple change of the aspect ratio and rotation under the Retroarch quick menu while in an game can many ANY vertical game rotate properly without a config file either. Wahooo!!

                      (I am using fba2012)

the point of the tate option was to eliminate the need for config files, but as long as you got it working i guess :)

@dankcushions correct - that's why I was so hard pressed to get it to work.

However, using mame2003 with all of the Tate instructions followed, it never worked. I'll revisit after my Brain has time to recover.

                          Thanks again

It's a HP 23" monitor but I'm not sure which since I got it "debranded" from woot.com a while back. It's an older model that weighs a good 5lbs even tho it's still slim. The reason I like it so much is it has good built-in speakers so I can plug in the Pi via HDMI and get sound from the monitor itself. it's a 1080p60 display with a gloss plastic screen. Wish i could tell you more but all the stickers were removed so i don't know the exact model. I only know it's HP since that's molded into the back plastic and I peeled off the cover sticker that was supposed to prevent me from figuring it out. It's about 3yrs old if that helps.

@esmith13 yeah i had the same 23" branded as an hp. The viewing angle and picture was the best ive ever seen in a monitor. I wish i had kept it. I gave it to my ex. The reason i asked is because ive never seen an unbranded model. When i used to build multi cabs i would always look for the best viewing angle monitors i could because cheap lcd's were terrible for vertical games because one person would get a nice screen and the other player would get a really dark screen because of the viewing angle. So i would always be looking for good deals on good quality monitors. If anyone wants a monitor that looks good for mame, i would recommend this monitor.

@KillerQ It must be awkward typing on that keyboard.

@columboscoat lol. That's just a backup. For anything major I use my trusty K400.

That little one is great for basic stuff, however.

@KillerQ nice setup. If you decide you dont want the kink in the cable, you can buy an angled hdmi cable. I too have one of those keyboards. Im thinking about rewiring the top 4 buttons on the right so i can use it as a controller if i want. Unless i can find a way to get retroarch to recognize them.
