      @mitu seems like I may have to settle for a middle ground then. Yes it is an interlaced image. I hate that There is no way to independently control the resolution on emulation station. Thank you for all of your assistance.

      I may continue to tinker with adjusting the resolution.

      @Simrose said in lower video resolution to improve performance?:

      I have currently default settings with retropie except I disabled 4k in the config.txt as recommended.

      how did you do this, specifically? posting your config.txt would help.

      @Simrose said in lower video resolution to improve performance?:

      I've read on some posts in this forum and from the web that lowering to 720p resolution might help improve overall emulation performance.

      i disagree with the premise. 1080p should be fine for pi4 at default settings. reducing the resolution further can give ugly scaling artefacts, especially on a larger TV.

      perhaps it's better to state the specific speed issue you're having, and we can diagnose it.

      @refazeshot1 check out this: https://www.libretro.com/index.php/changing-behavior-of-gl-and-glcore-video-drivers/

      “gl” is an OpenGL 2.0+ driver, when used with a version above 3.0 it’s called OpenGL Compatibility and can support up to OpenGL 4.6, but some GPU drivers don’t have that OpenGL Compatibility mode.

      it supports GLES from 1.0 to 3.x. pi4 is gles 3.1 in current retropie.

      “glcore” is an OpenGL 3.1+ driver, it’s also called OpenGL Core, it supports up to OpenGL 4.6.

      i think the mesa driver in current retropie supports open gl 2.1 on the pi4. so glcore is pointless/may cause issues.

      Video smoothing often makes the picture way too mushy for my taste, especially if the original resolution is very low. I prefer good crt shaders like the zfast shaders from @ghogan42.

      As for other video settings, I prefer the "core provided" aspect ratio, because I don't like, say, a 4:3 picture stretched to today's common 16:9, or the 3:4 ratio of many classic vertical games stretched to the native 4:3 on my DIY cabinet, making all game characters appear a little overweight to outright obese.

      We don't support 3rd party images, especially the ones loaded with ROMs. Ask the vendor for support or use the image from http://retropie.org.uk/download.

      Nevermind. I was able to test even though I'm away from it and I have an idea of how it works.

      Thanks for the help.
