Compatibility With Other Platforms
-
Hello all. I'm just curious if RetroPie has any compatibility with other platforms. Don't get me wrong, I love playing RetroPie on one of my many Raspberry Pi 3 boards, however I'm craving better performance in N64, PSP, and Dreamcast emulation. Particularly N64 and PSP. I'd also like to get closer to the possibility of Saturn, 3DO and possibly if the planets align even PS2 emulation. I'm thinking it's going to be a while yet before we see a Raspberry Pi 4 so I've started looking into other options just out of curiosity. I've recently become aware of another platform called the ASUS Tincker Board, which from what I can tell is basically like a Raspberry Pi 3 on steroids. It has a nearly identical form factor as well, which means it might be possible to use existing cases with little to no modification, though I'm not sure about this. It uses a beefed-up quad ARM Cortex-A17 CPU so I'm thinking it should be code compatible with RetroPie. But I'm unsure about the Mali-T764 GPU (thinking there likely isn't a working driver for it yet or something). Anyone out there have any opinions they would like to contribute? Any other platforms you'd like to talk about?

@drake999 if you want specs, best you'll get is a PC. I use my Linux laptop

@herb_fargus Hi. Thanks for the reply but I already have several PC's capable of running emulation with performance exceeding that of the Pi 3 greatly. The idea is to create something with the nice easy interface of RetropPie and be small enough that it integrates into a living room setting while being aesthetically pleasing, while simultaneously getting the performance boost you would from an x86 based gaming laptop or PC (though obviously not quite as dramatic as those). I've recently become aware of an Intel Atom based board (can't remember the name right now) which isn't much bigger than a Pi 3 and would probably be perfect for this. I understand there is an x86 version of RetroArch correct? Haven't had much time to delve too deep into this. I was mainly hoping to spark some conversation which would give me some leads to investigate and make for a potentially interesting topic.

I don't know exactly if this is something that would interest you, but something definitely to keep an eye on. A kickstarter is up for producing a new maker board. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/udoo/udoo-x86-the-most-powerful-maker-board-ever Though based on previous kickstarter campaigns, I would not hold my breath for getting this from a store anytime soon.

There are tons of dev type boards but none have the community and software support of the Raspberry Pi. Lakka does a pretty good job of supporting different kinds of hardware
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
