i kind of got it configured but cant get the caps lock on so struggling to input wifi password

You can copy a file on the /boot partition with the correct settings and the system will automatically configure the WiFi - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Wifi/#connecting-to-wifi-without-a-keyboard_1.

@markyb2021 If mitus solution doesn't work for you, see here for another option.

I had the same problem with my wifi password at first, due to the default keyboard layout being different. I believe this got set to UK when choosing 'locale' or something. I don't remember exactly, because it's been a while, but setting the keyboard layout to US resulted in all correct keystrokes.

But it may as well been written in Chinese
I’ve spent all day again today trying to get it up and running
I’m afraid I’m not used to all this programming system
Ok so I can configure the keyboard and 8bitdp sn30 pro plus wired
But I can’t get it to connect Bluetooth
          It’s registered but not connecting
And it won’t let me remove it
          Still can’t connect to WiFi
I’ve looked at the link and I’ve no idea
          I’m in the uk
I’ve learned a lot today , but still clueless 😀

Editing a file is not not programming.

            It’s registered but not connecting

Did you disconnect the controller from the USB and put it in pairing mode, before trying to register it ?

I’ve looked at the link and I’ve no idea

Unless you're telling us what you don't understand and what's not clear, we also have no idea how to provide further instructions.

I’ve watched you tube videos on setting up pi os and retro pie
I’ve managed to install raspbian and connect online etc
I tried to install the retro pie app witching the os and I managed that ok , but it failed at the end
I’ve installed retro pie in another card and that goes well
Configure key board and the sn 30 pro +
But can’t get the WiFi to connect or Bluetooth to work despite it showing registered
I’ve just wiped the retro pi card and doing a clean install and trying again
But I can’t understand the above instructions about the boot file

retropie app? we don't support running retropie within the desktop on a pi.

i would ignore youtube videos and stick to the official instructions: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/

But I can’t understand the above instructions about the boot file

which part? you may get more joy out of other emulation solutions on the pi, such as recalbox or lakka, which are a bit more forgiving for this kind of stuff.

I been looking at all the pi sites and trying all options
I’m not one for giving up
But this is breaking me today

There's no point in repeating again and again the same thing. If you wish to find a solution, you'll have to be more specific on what steps are you executing and which one doesn't work. X doesn't work is not a useful information to figure out why it's not working.

                    [..]
But I can’t understand the above instructions about the boot file

Again, what exactly doesn't sound familiar ? You say you've tried the 1st method, configuring via raspi-config and it's not working because of your keybord. The 2nd method is to put the sdcard in your PC, then create a wifikeyfile.txt text file on it with the name and passphrase for your WiFi network, then boot back to RetroPie and 'import' the file to automatically configure the WiFi. Have you tried the 2nd method ?

with out wanting to sound ungrateful or rude, this is completely alien to me, same way it was probably alien to you when you first started.
im trying to set up for retro gaming and not having much luck.
im going round in circles and not getting very far,
i appreciate the help but as i say the answers are not making any sense to me yet
all i want to do is set up retro pi with wifi and a bluetooth controller

@markyb2021 again, you can't be helped if you won't elaborate. you've been asked specific questions and you're not answering.

@markyb2021 By reading your comments about the challenges you are having, you may want to try Batocera or Lakka. They be more of a sweet spot for you, removing some current and future configuration challenges you may have. For those, I highly consider you watch some YouTube videos to also confirm if their ease of installation/configuration will are more comfortable to you.

                            Sorted it for now
downgraded to retro pie 4.6 and connected sn30pro +without issues
                            same with the wifi connecting
so looks like 4.7 has issues

@markyb2021 nope, i have 4 8BitDo Pads running very well and had no problems at all, not with retropie 2 x, nor with 3.x or 4.7.
It is your setup, but as you are not able to answer specific questions we will never know what is wrong with it.
