"Kiosk mode" very slow to load!
-
Ok, guess what, now after deleting all my picture folder and all my gamelist.xml from every folder it took 1 min 30 to boot..
So:
50 second without KIOSK
9 Min 30 With KIOSK
And 1 min 30 With KIOSK but WITHOUT any gamelist.xml and picture folder...1min 30 is still acceptable.. So i think the next step is to move all picture outside ROMS folder and edit every gamelist.xml to give new picture path... wow! a lot of work, and not sure if that will fix the issue or not!

@Ramses Good luck! It's going to be a long night...

Thanks, yep.. but if i do a "search and replace" in every file, i can change every path in few second.. so its not too bad...
Anyway.. i'll work on that and i'll post the result here
-
I have do many more test with that,
I discover that it took 9 min 30 to boot with the "Kiosk mode" installed.
But if i go in my \Roms folder and delete "gamelist.xml" from each system folder my raspberry now boot in 40 seconds!
Look like Kiost Mode dont like the "gamelist.xml" created with "universal XML scrapper"
I will try to scrap everything with the default emulationstation scrapper to see if it will work better...

I didn't see above but forgive me if I missed it. Have you disabled "Save Metadata On Exit" and enabled "Parse Gamelists Only"?

Yes i have played with those setting, here is the result i got:
BOOT TIME:
8 min 22 --> save metadata on exit = off parse gamelists only = on
8 min 25 --> save metadata on exit = off parse gamelists only = off
9 min 32 --> save metadata on exit = on parse gamelists only = off
9 min 35 --> save metadata on exit = on parse gamelists only = onHere is some other result:
BOOT TIME1 min 30 --> if no game is scrapped (if no picture/description/etc.. is attached to my game)
50 sec --> With all my library scrapped but NO KIOSK MODE INSTALLEDSo the problem is that KIOSK/KIDS mode dont like when we add picture/description to large game library..
KIOSK MODE is a very nice feature, but it is too slow to be usable in my situation.. probably because of some option it has: like the posibility to block some game to kids, possibility to set some game in favorite, ETC... And because of those option, the raspbery boot VERRRRRRY SLOWLY. And i dont need all those option, i just want to prevent my friend to acces some menu item (like scrap the game and other).
So the only way for me to do what i want is to block the entire menu, but if i do that, i will have no way to "shutdown system" i will have to turn power off to do that and this can corrupt my SD card...

@Ramses - OK sorry that didn't help. I'm currently using the kids/kiosk package as well but not seeing anywhere near the load times you are. I'm running on a Pi3 with 5k+ games and bootup and shutdowns are <30 seconds.

Well, i have a pie3b too, but i have 31489 games, and almost all of them have picture/description and everything..
...maybe thats why its so slow..
Like i said, if my game is NOT scrapped (no picture/description) it boot very fast in kiosk mode.. The issue is related to the fact that i have a lot of game AND all my game have picture/description in KIOSK MODE
If i keep all my image/description and remove only KIOSK mode, it is very fast too (50 sec!)
Like i said before: The problem is that KIOSK/KIDS mode dont like when we add picture/description to LARGE (30k+) game library..
-
well, i have do a lot of test to speed-up that in the last 10 days, but the only way i found to be able to have a descend boot speed is to remove games, or dont scrap game....
Now i have 17 700 games and it took 2min10 to start ...
Does anybody else have experienced this SLOW startup time with LARGE (30k+) scrapped game library in kiosk mode???
Or does anybody have found a fix for that?
-
@Ramses - why have so many in your active build? I understand keeping the backups. You could use a ROM cleaner to move the duplicates to another folder then scrap a manageable number.

I had over 30k but i have removed all duplicated and now i'm at 17 700 ..
Why i have so many? why not?
By the way, this tread is not about the reason why i have a large game library, its about the difficulty for "kiosk mode" to handle large library. And if i just remove 99% of my game, kiosk mode will continue to have difficulty to handle large library and next time someone use kiosk mode with large library same problem will happen.. So its better to find a way to fix that issue in kiosk mode itself than juste deleting all rom games
-
isn't kiosk/kids mode based on an older version of ES? it has had recent(ish) speed improvements that i guess aren't in the kiosk/kids fork.
