I suggest following the RetroPie wiki instructions on 4K resolution performance issues: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Pi4/?h=4k#4k-video-display

@oleguer please provide all the info requested in my link. that includes a specific example game, the image you used, the verbose log, and so forth.

that said, i don't use advmame on pi4 - i believe it is unoptimized. in the first instance you should use one of the recommended MAME/FBN emulators: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Arcade/#step-1-choose-your-arcade-emulators

lr-fbneo is probably the best all-round performer.

This is not the latest commit, meaning you probably updated from binaries if you updated today, i recommend always updating from sources.

Also, i remember people mentioned having weird boot delays when using (8bitdo?) controllers in bluetooth mode, is that what you are using ?

@digriz Thanks for the tip! You're right, the instructions were slightly vague for the different pairing options. My nephew is super patient so I know it's not really going to bother him. For me, I KNOW it could be better! LOL

      Thanks everyone.
It was due to bad dumps. I had bin files and a .zip romset solved the problem.
The control issue came from the 8bitdo controller. I connected it like a switch pro controller and everything is fine again.
I went further and replaced some of the original roms with dreamcast ports in order to use Redream. Really good perfs now !

@thorr69 TBH it's probably the best-case scenario. It's brand new and I should be able to get a refund, and better that than the Pi being knackered or unable to run Retropie :)

      And that did it.

After my last reply, I removed the gamepad physically, and put the alan-1 flight yoke adapter in position one of the RPI.

Then, I deleted the Mame-2003-plus config files at \home\pi\RetroPie\roms\arcade\mame2003-plus\cfg

I went into Retroarch config from Retropie and went to bind inputs for port 1. I changed it from Gamepad to Gamepad with Analog, set it to left analog, then mapped only the analog and four buttons.

Next, started up Star Wars, and mapped input for this game to the Analog X/Y and buttons.

      Deadzone gone!

Settings and everything held after reboot.

      Thanks for all the help!

I’m having the same issue with Amiberry: slow performance, choppy sound. I followed your advice regarding the resolution, but it didn’t work

Open a separate topic and add your system info, it doesn't seem to be the same issue.

Ok, I could solve it. There must have been a problem with IPv6, deactivating it solved the problem as in this thread:

      https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/28939/updating-broken-connection-time-out/7

Maybe this should be added to the documentation or the FAQ or somewhere as it seems to affect some people.

I deactivated it according to this guide:

      https://www.leowkahman.com/2016/03/19/disable-ipv6-raspberry-raspbian/

All sorted, the emulator is working perfectly. Thanks for all your help, and thanks also for putting up with my incompetence.

A huge thanks from both my wife and myself. We are both delighted!

Hi. I'm popping in late on this one but I wanted to point something else out to you while you travel down the Retropie path. Unlike other single source software that is written by one person and constantly updated by the same... Think or Retropie as a huge umbrella that a ton of individuals came together under to get all these emulators to work with each other.

Many of the emulators have been tweaked to specifically work in the Retropie world, so it will pay you back 10 fold to start to become familiar with some Linux commands and how it works. Don't have to be an expert, but as you add emulators and what they need to work, it will help a lot.

Download Putty and if you are using a PC WinSCP. They are for getting straight in to the PIs file system and working with it. You can use a Mac, but again, it's not always the same as just using mac files. Linux requires permissions to be changed on folders, files..etc.

Also... Commodore 64... If you are using Vice, there is a great video on youtube by a guy named ETAPrime who shows you how to configure the buttons to work the emulator. There is also lr-vice you can download sperately that will pickup the standard Retroarch joystick button commands.

Either way you'll need to read and research many of the emulators as you add them. Many need special configurations to use properly. Take one at a time. I have 43 systems running on mine. Took me almost a year to get them all working correctly...or as best that I could.

Good luck, come back often to ask questions. You're only 'incompetent' because you don't have knowledge. Knowledge is all about effort. Max effort = max knowledge.

      I have solved it!

It looks like it was the difference between using mame2003_libretro.so and mame2003_plus_libretro.so. I had copied mame2003_libretro.so from the regamebox distribution to the retropie distribution by mistake when I was testing to see if that file was the difference in performance... As can be seen above by my documentation of the command which runs the emulator in regamebox, it uses mame2003_plus_libretro.so.

So, to recap, if you are experiencing the usual slowdowns with double dragon while using retropie distribution and would like to eliminate it, you can just copy mame2003_plus_libretro.so from the regamebox distro into retropie wherever mame2003_libretro.so is... and of course have the settings set to use mame2003_libretro.so. Also, i assume if you install the mame2003_plus core and instruct retropie to use it, the effect would probably be the same.

Hope this helps someone out, I know there is lots of talk about laggy double dragon, and there really is no fix because it is emulating lag which was present in the actual hardware of the arcade cabinet... i've seen posts saying to use the bootleg version (ddragonb.zip) because it was built on better hardware, but this looks like a solid and more appropriate approach to fixing it!
