Our usual host @meleu is in an area without reliable Internet access this week, so he's asked me to post again on his behalf. I'm actually also away on a business trip to lovely Sri Lanka, but luckily I have access to Wifi, so here we go!

This is the 17th MAME Random Of the Week

The three random numbers for this week are: 520, 1602 and 1653

      520
Game Name: F-1 Grand Prix Part II
      Company: Video System Co.
      Year: 1992
      ROM file name: f1gp2.zip

      1602
      Game Name: Scion
      Company: Seibu Denshi
      Year: 1984
      ROM file name: scion.zip

      1653
      Game Name: Shanghai Kid
      Company: Taiyo (Data East license)
      Year: 1985
      ROM file name: shangkid.zip

      Please vote: http://www.strawpoll.me/12119715

We will check the most voted game on Wednesday. So we have Monday and Tuesday for experimentations.

      What is the MAME ROW?

MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME ROMset to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!

There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.

Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the results.

The current week's game thread is just where there are more people interacting/talking about the game(s). Feel free to post your hi-score (or any content about the game) anytime you want on the previous "rounds" topics (links below).

These "rules" are constantly being improved!

Explaining the randomness of the process

I took the 0.78 compatibility list and applied the following filters (in this order):

      1. Parent: (empty)
      2. Rpi 3 Status: (empty), OK, Untested
      3. Rpi 2 Status: OK, Untested
      4. Rpi 1 Status: Untested
      5. Manufacturer: clear the "bootleg" checkbox

Saved a new spreadsheet with only the results of those filters here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13Q7QEqV5lUo662nvAC3zS_AvQvsjspEcGHVhaHcyzbI/edit?usp=sharing

And then went to www.random.org and generated a random number between 2 and 2185 (ignoring 1 because of the column headers).

      Links to the previous "rounds"

      • Phoenix (not randomly chosen)
      • New Rally-X (not randomly chosen)
      1. Bosconian
      2. Blue's Journey / Raguy
      3. Lizard Wizard
      4. 4-D Warriors
      5. Raiga - Strato Fighter
      6. Pang!
      7. Air Duel
      8. Pac & Pal
      9. Puyo Puyo 2
      10. Forgotten Worlds
      11. Moon Cresta
      12. Frenzy
      13. Wanted
      14. Cop 01
      15. Aliens
      16. Mystic Riders

F-1 Grand Prix part II is a kind of interesting top-down racing game. nice graphics but i sort of hate that kind of racing game, unless it's micromachines!

scion is neat! interesting mechanic where you get power-ups to load up your bombs, and then destroy the weak-points of the enemy base. the bullets are a bit hard to see at times, but it didn't seem unfair.

shanghai kid is one of those super old school beat-em ups like IK+ that i just can't get to grips with at all.

        scion gets my vote :)

F-1 Grand Prix Part II is the first driving game I've played where you're essentially steering the track and the car stays totally still. Even Out Run or Enduro had the car move a bit.

Scion was a typical shooter, but I did like how the bombs worked once I figured out how to use them.

Shanghai Kid was ok, but this week my vote goes to Scion.

F1 makes me feel like i'm driving the road not the car.
            yeah Scion it is.

Yeah, F1 gives me a headache just watching the video of gameplay.

Oops sorry, didn't get time to take a look at these this week. Now I have though, and I would have voted for Scion anyway.

F1 makes me feel pretty nauseous very quickly, and Shanghai Kid isn't exactly the fluid fighter we later came to expect from the genre!

Scion is pretty good, although I get a weird persistent motion effect after playing it for a while, when on the High Score screen - it feels like the whole screen is still moving!

I've only managed 25520 so far.

I think Scion suffers from Mystic Riders syndrome, as in, you get hit by a projectile you don't see.

And here's the dedicated overlay I just made.

                        0_1485017251534_scion_udb.png

I cannot test it right now.. can anybody confirm it works fine ?

Based on Arcade Flyer: couldn't find any other decent artwork.

@UDb23 It seems to work fine for me with RetroPie X86. I'm not able to test it on a Raspberry Pi right now.

@obsidianspider thanks! It looks there's some extra black space between the game area and the overlay on the sides. Will be able to test later today.

Sorry, I would have done this but wasn't sure how to do it.

I've now read through the instructions in a previous ROW thread and volunteer to step in if both of you are busy in the future!

I put together a little MS Access database to perform the draw, but posting the new thread etc. is all still a manual process.
