That's super-helpful, thanks. (Sadly it doesn't actually work for me because it needs a newer Caprice release than the I have, which doesn't support 6128+, and it refuses to update because I'm not running poxy bastarding Stretch. But if I ever put myself through that hell it's good to know it should be ready :))

Pulled latest Retropie-Setup from git, reran, and this time there were no errors showing afterward (i.e. the main menu for the script was showing as expected). I looked through the log file, especially the section involving lr-caprice32, and didn't see any fatal errors (just some compile warnings).

@lexus I don't think it has anything to do with RetroPie, it seems to me the first place you should check are your locale and keyboard language settings.
In the terminal enter sudo raspi-config to check and change your Localisation Options.
