Both advmame and advmess configuration files are under $HOME/.advnance - named advmame.rc/advmess.rc. Game specific configurations are saved there, prefixed with the game/romset name.

That's super-helpful, thanks. (Sadly it doesn't actually work for me because it needs a newer Caprice release than the I have, which doesn't support 6128+, and it refuses to update because I'm not running poxy bastarding Stretch. But if I ever put myself through that hell it's good to know it should be ready :))

Self-answering: the problem with D64 files turned out to be a dodgy disk. So what you need to do to play C16/Plus 4 games in MESS is add the following lines to EMULATORS.CFG:

      advmessc16prg = "/opt/retropie/emulators/advmame/bin/advmess c16 -log -cfg /opt/retropie/configs/c16/advmess.rc -quickload %ROM%" advmessc16disk = "/opt/retropie/emulators/advmame/bin/advmess c16 -log -cfg /opt/retropie/configs/c16/advmess.rc -floppydisk %ROM%" advmessplus4prg = "/opt/retropie/emulators/advmame/bin/advmess plus4 -log -cfg /opt/retropie/configs/c16/advmess.rc -quickload %ROM%" advmessplus4disk = "/opt/retropie/emulators/advmame/bin/advmess plus4 -log -cfg /opt/retropie/configs/c16/advmess.rc -floppydisk %ROM%"

Then when you boot, choose the version you want from the RUNCOMMAND menu, eg if it's a C16 PRG file choose "advmessc16prg".

Once a PRG file is loaded, just type RUN. (I find if you do it too soon you have to do it twice, so wait a couple of seconds.)

      If it's a D64 file, type LOAD"",8,1, then RUN when it's done.

AdvMESS runs the games much faster and smoother than VICE, but its compatibility is quite poor, so horses for courses.

@dmmarti It was simpler than that - I'm a dumdum and I had so many folders with CoCo BIOS files in them from when I was trying to get it work that I'd added the Extended Basic ROMs to every folder except the right one :D

ANSWERING YOUR OWN QUESTION AGAIN DEPARTMENT:

Don't ask me to explain this, but to navigate the boot menu you have to hold up on the joystick while tapping the down cursor key on the keyboard.

And I was right, get past that and the emulation is superb, bringing some real curios to the Pi. (For many years, the Tutor had the ONLY home-TV licenced port of Scramble, the only other format to get one being the Vectrex. Quite a brutal version of Mr Do as well.)

@mediamogul That sorted the Channel F (with a bit of tweaking), cheers.

The Astrocade I'd already fixed, and it works fine for every game I've tried EXCEPT Space Fortress (unfortunately the best game on the system), which used to run fine but now goes at about 1fps. I tried using your .RC file instead, but the exact same thing happened.

The really freaky one is the Arcadia, though. I can get it to run no problem, right up to the point where I start any game, at which point it plays them by itself. No matter how I set the controls, the player ship will just lurch around, moving and shooting (or whatever) all on its own, regardless of whether I touch the controls or not.

But here's the REALLY wacky part.

If I boot up Pleiades on the Arcadia, it plays through the first three stages by itself. It's pretty good - it clears them all. So I wondered if I'd (somehow) recorded and then played back a previous game. But THEN, and only then, it gives me back control for the last stage (the one where you steer onto an airstrip dodging the parked ships). Keyboard and joystick both control the ship perfectly.

Once I've steered to the target and completed the stage, the Pi takes over and plays by itself again.

If anyone can explain any of THAT, I'm all ears.

(I've also tried installing Quasi88, which seems to have gone fine, but attempting to boot a game disk just leaves me looking at a black screen saying "V2 4MHz". I can access the menus with F12, but nothing in them gets me anywhere.)

EDIT: Ah, wait - so far as Quasi88 goes, it seems I was just really unlucky in my choice of games. I managed to pick a 100% fail rate of ones it doesn't seem to run (eg Xevious and Pac-Man). Other stuff like 1942, Bomb Jack and Dig Dug all work. They still don't in AdvMESS, though.

@teller You could try to adapt the script_play commands from here: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/19844/advmess-for-dummies-a-basic-guide/61 so that the game(s) start automatically. I haven't tried it for the Jupiter Ace though.

@SpudsMcToole That's a pity. I've only got 4 games setup at present so haven't encountered that problem (albeit for some reason Elite simply won't work when I chain load it - I'll need to check whether it works with the run command instead).

@John_RM_70 Aha! The key was renaming the BIOS file to dragon32.zip! (From d32.zip.) Many many thanks for that. Now I have the Dragon OS screen showing, if I could only figure out why the A key won't work (leaving me only able to type "CLODM") I'd be sorted...

@SpudsMcToole Oh, if it helps - when I get the MESS copyright splash screens and it says "Type OK or move joystick left then right to confirm", the joystick is recognised and works but the keyboard doesn't. (The keyboard works fine with other emulators.)
