It looks I’m on Batocera 39 indeed. Isn’t it easier to update to 40? Or do you recommend knulli for another reason?

Update: ah, I read that 40 will be the last version so it makes sense to switch to Knulli. Thanks for the tip.

So this what I have. The grid actually works and all I really need to do now is add in all the Metadata and positioning of everything. I used <autoLayout>1 5</autoLayout> under imagegrid to specify how many columns I have as well as how many games are shown in the grid. Anyway, thanks again for the help, even though I ended up figuring it out for myself. At least I know that what I did matched your suggestion to a T.

You can probably automate some stuff. The ROM-Emulator association is stored in /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulators.cfg. If you already configured some games to start with specific emulators, then you already have some entries there so you can see how its format and replicate it for other games.

update: This did the trick! My carousel assets and backgrounds load perfectly after resizing the backgrounds from 1920x1080 to 1280x720. Thanks!
