So what is the correct way of configuring a controller?

      • When I configure a controller, my controller does not have Left Thumb, how do I skip a button?

      • If I assign a wrong button, how do I erase the assignment?

      • After choosing all the button assignments, I cannot press ok. This never worked in retropie, not in previous versions, not in latest update, never. The only solution I found is to wait, because ES seems to automatically choose ok after waiting 45 seconds or so. But I have just configured my buttons, so let me use them to press "ok" and be done with it.

      • How do I exit or cancel the controller configuration dialog if I entered it by mistake it made a wrong assignment? There's an "OK" button but no "cancel" button at the bottom. Can I use a keyboard to exit it? How?

      • If I configure multiple controllers, how do I choose which one is player 1 and which one is player 2? Also, where is this information displayed? The only info I get is when I choose to configure yet another controller. Then it tells me how many are detected! That seems all.

      • How can I see my current button configuration for each controller without changing it?

      • What is RetroPie's default keyboard setup? In case my controllers are configured wrong, which keyboard keys are ok/cancel etc, which keyboard keys quit the emulator?

It seems to me that for a system that is based on playing games, the control configuration and especially he user feedback about it is currently extremely lacking. But I might have missed a menu somewhere that gives me control over these things.

Thanks this answered some of my questions. But some questions remain:

          • How do I select which controller should be player 1? It seems to be determined somewhat randomly at boot time, and from then on it seems fixed forever.

          • I frequently find myself in a game with player 1 having the wrong controller assigned, and that controller is already unplugged. So to fix the controllers, I have to go back to ES using the keyboard. How do I exit games with the keyboard only?

          • I often assign a button wrong by accident, how do I change an existing assignment to a different one without re-assigning the whole controller?

@rsn8887: To answer your first question, @meleu has a great script that you can use to change which controllers are used for player 1/2/3, etc.

My ES themes: MetaPixel | Spare | Io | Indent
