Nothing is working on rpi3

ok so i just got a raspberry pi 3 and i have raspbian installed on it. i wanted to get retropie and i was following this site to help me through the process: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Manual-Installation/ and i got to the part where i need to enter "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" into the terminal.
it does the process and i get to a part where it is asking me if i want to upgrade/update, use the default, or see the difference between the two and it looked like this: (Y/N/D) (there were i think two more options but it dont remember them) I type in "d" and hit enter and the terminal takes me to a different thing thats not related to the retropie installation and it says something about jpg files and at the very bottom is says (END). i hit enter thinking it would take me back to the (Y/N/D) section but it doesn't, so somehow i got back to the pi@raspberrypi:~$ command line and right above this it says something like : +1 start (there was something here but i do not remember what it was).
SO THEN i put the "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" command back in and it does a little bit of the process and it stops and it says some thing about something being locked. So i decide to reboot the pi and it boots back up and NOTHING works.
The usb slots, bluetooth, wifi, and sound do not work. It all says that the adapters couldn't be found. I then wanted to just reset the whole pi and try again and i read that you need to reboot and hold shift to get into the NOOBS recovery system. The problem with that is i use VNC Viewer to see my raspberry and i run it on my laptop. So i wouldn't be able to do this and i even tried hooking the pi up to my tv but like i said none of the usb slots work.
I am in a serious panic and i am afraid that i have ruined my raspberry pi. I do not know what to do and i really need some help and i so sorry if this is very unclear, please ask me questions. I seriously got this a day ago and i don't know what happened.

@dazed_king11 What you're describing has nothing to do with RetroPie - but with Raspbian. If you're new to Linux, then I suggest starting with the Debian user documentation (on which Raspbian is based) - https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/index.en.html.
Also, if you're new to Linux and to the Raspberry PI in general, don't be afraid to start over - rewrite/flash your SD card and start again.If your intent is to run RetroPie on the Raspberry PI, then you can flash directly the RetroPie SD card images at https://retropie.org.uk/download/. RetroPie is not an OS in itself, it uses Raspbian Lite underneath.

Is the Debian doc gonna help me fix what happened? I don't even know what I should be looking for, it seems like no one else has had this exact issue

No, it's not - it's going to teach you how to use and configure a Debian GNU/Linux system - especially
apt-get. If you want to reset the whole system, then follow what I've said before and re-flash the SD card with the RetroPie provided image.
EDIT: Just to be clear, if you want to use RetroPie you'll have to connect it to a TV/Monitor, using VNC will not work. -
If you are used to an OS such as Winodws or Mac, then Linux is a pretty steep learning curve. It took me a few days of reading and getting it wrong and reinstalling Raspbian more than once to work out what was happening. I installed RetroPie from the manual install script a couple of times as well. You won't damage your PI but maybe get frustrated and banging your head against the table trying to work out what won't work and why
There is quite a bit of manual installation even after getting RetroPie up and running. Linux is a good OS but needs a fair bit of user assistance to get it running how YOU want it to run, especially in allowing access to various parts that you normally wouldn't be able to access to give you more control over it
Once it is running, RetroPie is a breeze to use and very simple to add to as and when YOU want to including adding or removing ROMs or emulator systems, unlike Windows that constantly badgers you for yet another security/software update (especially Windows 10 that has taken ALL the control away from the user when updates are needs .... or that Microsoft believe is needed)
