Bombers Notebook Issue - Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask
-
I have tried searching through various forums and posts but have not found a solution that seems to work. Everytime I go into the in game menu and scroll to the bombers notebook, I can see the icon. However, when I click on it all I get is a black screen. I can navigate back to the in game menu using the standard "B" button for n64 and I can also hear that the sound is operational while in the notebook.
Seems like this is not the first time someone has come across this as I have seen a few posts but no resolution that worked 100% for everyone.
One of the first things I did was try Hi-Res Texture packs to see if that would fix the problem. It did not, although the rest of the textures look great! I tried both Bluedar's and Djipi's packs. I then tried with the various video plugins available; RICE, glesN64 and GLideN64. No impact, still seeing a black screen. I looked into a few posts that suggested disabling the smart frame buffer option in the mupen64plus config file. This had no impact for me. My mupen64plus config file is here for reference: https://pastebin.com/2vNTFks0
I am running Retropie on a Raspberry Pi 3B+, overclocked. Overclock values are:
arm_freq=1350
core_freq=600
gpu_freq=600
sdram_freq=550
sdram_schmoo=0x02000020
over_voltage_sdram=2
over_voltage=6
v3d_freq=525Seems to be running very stable, most n64 games show very little lag.
Retropie v 4.4.3
Emulation Station v2.7.6RPI purchased and set everything up in the last few weeks and made every update I could to make sure I am running all of the latest stable software.

Bumping this thread to see if anyone has a solution for this issue now....?

@davey2003 you can try to convert your save file from .sra to .srm and see if it will work using lr-mupen64plus
Here is a link to the converter: https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=!AJYNHmea0NSr_cY&cid=EEB961B2FD633089&id=EEB961B2FD633089!496&parId=EEB961B2FD633089!495&action=locate
Drag you .sra file on to the converter and it will convert it into a .srm
Also are you running Kodi or doing video decoding or something? Because your overclock settings don't make a lot of sense for just retropie.

@davey2003 so I just checked lr-mupen64plus will display the bombers notebook properly however the games titles screen is black (you can still press start and the save file select screen comes up) also some cut scenes are black but text still appears on the screen. Unfortunately it doesn't look like there is a good way to emulate this game on the pi currently. If you still want to play it I would suggest using lr-mupen64plus since you can still progress in the game.

Oddly enough, I was going to start a new thread referencing @quicksilver to see if he knew more about this than I did (probably), as I was trying to play through MM. You’re more familiar with the mupen64/glide config options than I am. Do you know how to Enable the smart buffer option/is it possible to do?
https://github.com/mupen64plus/mupen64plus-user-issues/issues/410
“using the smart buffer option seems to fix this for glide64.”
-
@hooperre so according to that link:
"You can fix this in Glide64 by enabling the "Smart Framebuffer" option. At the moment
there isn't an equivalent fixing option in Rice."So I tested gliden64 with MM on the pi (the Zelda games are blacklisted for gliden64 so to test I had to remove them from the blacklist in the mupen64plus.sh) and found that the bombers notebook is visible however there are tons of visual glitch/depth issues while running that plugin so I can see why it's blacklisted. Unfortunately right now if you want to play this game on a pi you won't be able to play it with anything near 100% accuracy. Lr-mupen64plus probably is your best bet since it seems only some cutscenes are affected and everything else works (or so it seems so far).
-
@quicksilver Ah I didn’t realize it was actually running it on Rice though I had Glide selected. That makes sense. Thanks for checking that out. Bummer. Thought it had found it.
Rice isn’t in development anymore is it? I don’t expect a fix anytime soon.
-
@hooperre unfortunately I don't think there will be a fix for this anytime soon either. I was looking forward to playing this game too as it's one I never really played much as a kid (played the heck out of oot). Here's to hoping the pi4 isn't too much further down the road.

What would be the advantage even if the Pi 4 has a beefier GPU (applied to this specific bug)? Just curious why you said that aside from like every other N64 game?
As for MM, about 6 months ago I made it about 2/3 through the game with Djipi’s texture mods. It stutters every now and then, but it looks like the 3DS version and runs well enough to play imo. But with the Djipi textures now I’m still running into issues. Too bad there’s no “cheat” that fixes the notebook like it fixes the OoT pause issue.
-
@hooperre so the current generation of pi gpu's are gles2. Essentially this means the GPU is incapable of handling certain more advanced functions that more modern devices can. Very likely that the next generation of pi's will be gles3 which will allow those more advanced functions and in turn means more accurate emulation.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Do you happen to know offhand whether updating mupen64plus means you have to re-enter the cheat for OoT to reduce pause wait times with every update? Thanks again.

@hooperre my recommendation for OOT is to switch to lr-mupen64plus and in the retroarch menu turn less accurate blending off. I have found this to be the best experience overall. If you play using gles2rice then the lens of truth doesn't work. Update lr-mupen64plus from source and it will include the menu delay hack by default. If you have been using gles2rice then you can take your save file and convert it using the program in the link I posted previously and then it will work with properly with lr-mupen64plus.
-
@quicksilver Thanks, friend. I’ll give it a go.

Thanks for the information here. I was about to start a play through so this is very much appreciated. I'm all updated from source and good to go now. :-) Pity about MM but it is what it is right now. Like you say, hopefully a RPi 4 should it ever happen will lead to some improvement.

@Ranma out of curiosity I have been playing through MM using lr-mupen64plus and really it's only been the opening title screen and a few cutscenes (so far...) that are just a black screen. So far it seems mostly playable if you are willing to have a slightly less than the perfect experience. :)

I'm more than happy to continue with a slightly less than perfect experience so that's really good to hear so I'll start a game myself and see how it goes. Thanks for replying. :-)

@Ranma Remember to turn off less accurate blending for this game as well. There are visual glitches if its turned on.
