FBA vs. MAME
-
I'm really enjoying my new arcade folder also.
To tidy things up completely, it could have been nice to base the lists on the non-mahjong and non-adult DAT files, but I guess that's just personal taste.
-
What do you guys think about adding the Neogeo set under FBA?
-
@johnodon if anyone has a NeoGeo gamelist with zip files listed, I can make an FBA list with these included.
Personally, I like to have NeoGeo games listed under the NeoGeo system folder.

I think this is close to all of them (bios file removed from list):

If anyone wants a shortcut to all of this, here is a link to my emulators.cfg. If you see anything wrong, let me know.
2278 games total
43 advmame
1613 lr-fbalpha
640 lr-mame2003
2 lr-mame2010John

@andershp You mention "sound glitches" in rtype and gyruss, could you be a little more precise ? Also, those glitches happen with any sound setting (samplerate, sample interpolation & fm interpolation) in the core options ?
Those games should run flawlessly considering their cpu usage, so perhaps there is some glitch which needs to be reported to the fbalpha team. -
I'm not sure if anyone is keeping a definitive list but in addition - footchmp.zip, euroch92.zip and hattrick.zip all have poor sound in the intros and for the in game "voice over" in lr-fbalpha. No issues in lr-mame2003/2010 and mame4all (Rpi 3 stock settings). It may improve with tweaks but it's better to choose an emulator that works right away.
Is it worth reporting these to the FBA alpha team?
Also a massive thanks to everyone involved in putting all this together. It has kept me busy this weekend!

If this is bad enough to make people choose another emulator, i think it is.
Btw, hattrick can't have poor sound in fba since it is not emulated at all. -
@barbudreadmon to be honest I made the assumption about hattrick as it's the same game.
-
@AndersHP @tashman So i tried rtype, footchmp, euroch92 and gyruss in mame2003, and while i didn't notice the "poor sound" or "sound glitches" you mentioned for the first 3, there is definitely something off with fbalpha's gyruss sound, so i bumped an old topic about gyruss sound upstream : http://neo-source.com/index.php?topic=2490.0
-
@AndersHP The difference between mame and fbalpha for gyruss is only the balance, i just patched it in lr-fbalpha, let me know what do you think about the new one.
PS : i still don't know what are your sound glitches in rtype.
-
Sorry for being so passive here, I will check these out ASAP.
As for Gyruss, it's the spawning sound that's off in fba. Very fuzzy. It's much better and sharper sounding in MAME2003.Rtype I had actual soundglitches in, but will test again soon.

How do I get this? Just update my lr-fbalpha emulator? Or are we talking new romsets?
-
@andershp just update from sources
-
@andershp So, how did it turn out ? I think it's better than before, not sure it will be to your liking though, keep in mind that :
- this is the favorite game of dink (the fba upstream developper who provided me this patch), so his main objective was to match his own likings.
- the sound and balance for this game in mame2003 weren't considered perfect, and had several patches since then, i don't know how the current ones sound.

Updating from source now. Will test tonight, given that my little son allows this :)

Alright, with the risk of being called pedantic, here goes:
I tried rtype.zip and gyruss.zip (haven't tested other versions of these games) with the newest Final Burn Alpha from source (0.2.97.42) and compared them to MAME2003 (0.78).
R-Type:
I still notice very small soundglitches, it's like running the game in windows while something happens in the background, making a very small hiccup. I tried filming it, see this video, exactly as the timer skips to 3 seconds into the video:
These glitches happened some 5 times at different places in the first stage that I tested, and did not happen in MAME2003.Gyruss:
I can appreciate the balance adjustments, it's like the sound is centered better in FBA than MAME2003, but I really think the spawning sound is very fuzzy, which was my only problem with the FBA version to begin with. The spawning sounds like it has a cold.... HAHA! I know it doesn't make sense, but it kind of ruins it for me :D
Listen here, in the very beginning of the video when the ship spawns: (truly sorry for the ambient tv-sound, please try to ignore this)
I also made videos of the music in level 2, just for comparison:
As an old drummer, I cannot help to notice that FBA runs a little fewer beats per second, do you hear it also? The music in MAME2003 sounds like it's just a tad faster, especially noticeable on level 2. Not much though.
Damn, this game is just awesome. Hard to play with one hand only though. :)
Another difference is the difficulty - much harder on FBA, notice especially level 1, with almost no enemy fire on MAME compared to quite a lot of shooting on FBA. -
I think some games fell through the cracks. For example, I noticed Chiller is missing for some reason.
-
@supermagicom don't know this game. Is it best run on mame or fba?
-
@andershp while i hear the rtype sound glitch in your video (and it's exactly as you describe : feels like something is suddenly happening in the background), i tried to reproduce it myself without success : i just finished the game with the invincibility dipswitch on so that i could pay attention only to the sound (even closed my eyes when there was no boss to fight), i didn't notice a similar hiccup once, i can also say that the game didn't seem to go above 71% cpu usage on my rpi3, even in stage 5 when there are slowdowns (they are probably from the original hardware, i guess they'll disappear if you use the "CPU overclock" core option).
A setup issue is extremely likely, it makes me think about this post where the OP has "jumpy scrolling" when retroarch's video threading is set to on (which is the default setting in retropie, doesn't cause issue with his other emulators including lr-mame2003, and doesn't cause issue with lr-fbalpha for other users including me).
I'll take another look at gyruss later this week-end.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
