      @rk1gaming SSH is another method of remotely accesing your PI, over the network - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/SSH/. If your keyboard/screen are frozen, you can still access your system this way and check what's wrong or reboot it.
      Does this happen with every game or just a set of ROMs - like the Neo Cherry Master ?

        it happens with a vast majority of the games. in fact, it has locked up even when installing a package...like for a system emulator.

          @rk1gaming Do you get a lightning bolt at the top of the screen when the freezing happens ?

              @rk1gaming Honestly, looks more like a faulty power supply or card, and not software related. Can you post your config.txt file, from the SD card ?

                Hmmmm, the power supply came with a kit I bought, but the lightning bolt happened when I used the old power supply. And the sd card is kind of old.

                config.txt

                For more options and information see

                http://rpf.io/configtxt

                Some settings may impact device functionality. See link above for details

                uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode

                #hdmi_safe=1

                uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible

                and your display can output without overscan

                disable_overscan=1

                uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console

                goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border

                #overscan_left=16
                #overscan_right=16
                #overscan_top=16
                #overscan_bottom=16

                uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's size minus

                overscan.

                #framebuffer_width=1280
                #framebuffer_height=720

                uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output

                #hdmi_force_hotplug=1

                uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (this will force VGA)

                #hdmi_group=1
                #hdmi_mode=1

                uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in

                DMT (computer monitor) modes

                #hdmi_drive=2

                uncomment to increase signal to HDMI, if you have interference, blanking, or

                no display

                #config_hdmi_boost=4

                uncomment for composite PAL

                #sdtv_mode=2

                #uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.
                #arm_freq=800

                Uncomment some or all of these to enable the optional hardware interfaces

                #dtparam=i2c_arm=on
                #dtparam=i2s=on
                #dtparam=spi=on

                Uncomment this to enable the lirc-rpi module

                #dtoverlay=lirc-rpi

                Additional overlays and parameters are documented /boot/overlays/README

                Enable audio (loads snd_bcm2835)

                dtparam=audio=on
                gpu_mem_256=128
                gpu_mem_512=256
                gpu_mem_1024=256

                  Wrap the contents of the file in code tags (````) so it's readable. Doesn't seem you have anything different than the stock image, so I'd try a different SD card just to make sure it's not that.

                      @rk1gaming put four back tics (````) without the parenthesis before and after blocks of code so that it looks like this:

                              I just got a brand new SD card and copied the image to it. Pu the card into the Pi, the initial install went fine and so did updating the system. I went to install the first package "DGEN" and it locked up. Why?

                                You should try determining if your problem is HW related - run a CPU stress program (like https://core-electronics.com.au/tutorials/stress-testing-your-raspberry-pi.html) and see if it still locks up. Locking is usually indicative of inadequate power supply or improper ventilation.

                                    While looking the other day of the over the Raspbian updates, I've noticed they added a recent change in the firmware, specifically for the 3b+ model. The change is firmware:

                                    platform: Pi3 B+ reduce sdram freq to 450 while investigations are ongoing

                                    referencing a long thread in their forums (https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=208821) where lockups are reported for the new model. Some of the topic posters ran a stress test using memtester and got pretty reproducible lockups.

                                    If you manage to get a stress test that would lock up the system, you might try either to update to the latest firmware (via rpi-update) or add to your config.txt file

                                    sdram_freq=450

                                    and see if you get a more stable system.

                                      @mitu isn't 450mhz the stock speed? What are they reducing from?

                                          @quicksilver For the 3B+, sdram_freq seems a bit different (500). If you have one, you can check with vcgencmd get_config int from a command line.

                                            @rk1gaming Just add it at the end of the file, on a separate line. But, have you been able to run any of the stress tests I've been mentioning ?
