BINGO.... I figured this out and was just coming back to say thanks for the SDL tip again. For the record, I added the env variable to "/etc/environment" to make it a system wide change.

@mitu Thanks for the reply. I apologize, I'm rather new to using RetroPie on Ubuntu. I was just going by what the default value was on the emulator selection screen when you press a button while the ROM is launching.

@mitu I wrote it on Debian 12 with gnome fallback mode (x11)

Edit: I have now tested on Debian with wayland and it seems to work the same. The window refocus if I Alt-Tab. Although it seems that the standard emulationstation executable does not minimize on wayland for me for some reason.

I made a separate script that skips if wayland is in use as I have no issues with it and the first script introduced some weird behaviour..

This is how I do it when mame has been already configured earlier :
Extract the .7z in /opt/retropie/emulators/mame .

Commands for installing the dependencies and configuring :

cd RetroPie-Setup/ sudo ./retropie_packages.sh mame depends sudo ./retropie_packages.sh mame configure

Yep. Standard gnome ubuntu. Tried it with both wayland and X sessions.
Same problem though. Stutter won't go away.
Note that the stutter also affects sound. It's not a simple TV mode that's causing tearing. My TV is using Game mode.
