@mancity try and compress the img file with 7-zip or similar, it will certainly reduce the file size...

Thanks Floob! Believe it or not, I had already come across that smartretro post by you earlier today while googling-about. my neogeo.zip should contain all of the required files. I even downloaded the uni-bios from that site linked on there and threw those in for an unsuccessful try.

As for the romset, I used the dat file provided on the wiki page to create this set actually. I would like to believe it is all correctly named and the checksums all match, according to clrmamepro.

Its not a huge deal, I just really wanted to try out the emulator alongside the three builds of FBA already on here.

can't advise without a log (eg /tmp/runcommand.log) - but you are using the system in a way it was not designed, so you will have to debug it yourself.

I decided to give this one more try - i don't think there would be automatic permission to write into the folder that the mame.ini is configured to save to /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-mame2010/sta.

    If i change

    state_directory sta

    to

state_directory /home/pi/RetroPie/SAVES (i know there is permission to write here)

should that attempt to save to <root>/home/pi/RetroPie/SAVES or will it be looking for /home/pi/RetroPie/SAVES inside the folder it is already in?

Can I use <root> as i have above in the .ini file, or don't i need to?

@caver01 said in More annoying MAME questions!:

If you plan to use arcade analog controls (spinner, trackball), you can get both of these working very well in AdvanceMAME. Also, vector games can be played at the native resolution of your display using AdvanceMAME so they can look nice and clear. That aside, I second lr-mame2003 for all of the working features as well as retroarch shaders as a first choice.

Yes that's true, AdvMAME is way more flexible than I ever thought and it's a staple system for me now in addition to the others. My plan is definitely to bump up to lr-mame2003 but I have everything working perfectly right now and really need to see what I am missing between the two that would motivate me to build a new set from scratch and sort it as I don't like dumping a full set when I will play only a fraction of them.

@thrussmeister There's a UK based website that has the current version of MAME and also what they call a rollback torrent. You can rollback to ANY version of MAME with a few clicks. It's extremely slick for RetroPie that supports so many different version sets.

With Mac OS X you're currently limited with you're options due to a change in SMB. I use Cyberduck for quick access to SFTP transfers, but you can also use it for FTP. When connecting, the username is "pi" and the password is "raspberry".

it contains system config changes to make linux work better with the RPI. Once installed answer "Y" to any questions regarding overwriting existing configs. It wont get wiped.

@JohnB So you are trying to use the controler on the PORTS, right? Those are retroarch-independent, so they don't assume the retroarch configs. Controller configuration for the games in the PORTS section is game-specific. Check the proper wiki page for each PORT for info about configuring controllers

    @silencrs :

I also got this idea a while ago and did this post:

    http://blog.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/playing-retropie-on-smart-tv-without-hdmi-but-via-wlan/

Bad thing is, that i still havent found a solution for this. But i have to mention that i wanted to use my RaspberryPi to do this. Maybe there is a solution for stronger computers.

I read the following on the MAMEDEV.org-FAQs:

"To save the state of a game, use the default save state sequence of Shift + F7. At this point, you will get a prompt asking you to select a slot. Type a letter from 'a' to 'z' and the game's state will be saved.
    ...
To restore a saved state, use the default load state key F7. Again, you will prompted to select a slot to load from, and the state will be loaded."

So maybe i can assign another button as a substitute for a letter on the keyboard?

I changed my tv input and it is not doing it anymore. Must have been a setting on my tv.

I had black bars on all 4 sides. Then after enabling overscan, it would seem that the bars at the top and bottom were a little bit wider so the image didn't vertically fill my entire screen area. But all is good now :)
