      @sleve_mcdichael Thank you so much. I'm not very familiar with github at all. Thank you for sending me that link. I went back to the repo and now I see how to get to that. (I didn't notice the releases area off to the right.

      Thank you so much @sleve_mcdichael Very thankful to you.

      @sleve_mcdichael And can you do that with a command through SSH ?

      Maybe something like:

      pkill emulationstatio && emulationstation

      (Note the misspelled emulationstatio in the first one -- this is intentional.)

      This tries to kill ES and then, only if that worked, restart it.

      Also it would be interesting what would happen if a game is running, would that break the game

      This I'm not sure but should be easy enough to test using the above.

      Are excessively large collections a problem for start up?

      What is the maximum number of roms combined across all systems it can handle before start up and/or crash is a problem?

      Haven't done any extensive testing, but I recall a while ago a forum member tried to load more than 100k games and ES crashed due to insufficient memory. That was on a RPI 3, which had something less than 800Mb RAM available (the rest being taken by the GPU memory).

      On a RPI4, with more RAM available, things might be better. Of course, if you're not using a SBC, RAM may not be an issue.

      Is it really necessary to go through checks? Eg. if I symlink within a system to a specific folder on a large HDD, could it build a list only when I go in to that particular folder?

      Symlink-ing won't help much, you can already mount your ROM folders from an USB drive and this would speed things up for the initial scan.

      I suppose if I built a massive gameslist.xml and not parse, would this help or would that be just the same as that's the way ES works?

      It would help with the initial loading, otherwise you'll need to wait for ES to re-scan the folders on start and depending on how many games you have, that can take a while (not only an a Pi).

      Also, when I set that part about ES not saving meta data, will that be saved to a config file somewhere (and which one).

      EmulationStation's setttings are saved in $HOME/.emulationstation/es_settings.cfg.

      @mitu
      Thank you! that was the problem The SD card was full like 100% full!. I free-ed up some space and my favourites etc, are being saved. I tested restarting emulation station and re-booting the Pie. All working fine now.

      I feel like a fool! Thank you for your help.

      Not a complaint, but a request: it might be nice to get a big fat warning if settings cannot be saved due to no SD card space. But from now on I will make sure to leave some space on the SD card.

      @cyperghost ok I figured it out :)
      it's a little bit of a bug but totally fixable.

      ES uses both gamelist.xml found at /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/gamelists/"console"/ and /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/"console"/

      so if there's no gamelist.xml in the console folder under roms, it will use the one found in configs. for some reason it doesn't remove entries, only adds them.

      it will also not untag favorites if you DO have a gamelist.xml in your roms but DON'T have an entry in your gamelist.xml for the tagged favorite game.

      Best word of advice: scrape like you've never scraped before lol

      @jonnykesh have you ever heard of the controller connecting via Bluetooth, retropie detecting the game pad, but NONE of the buttons working on gamepad?? I’m going to try another gamepad, this is most recent 1.23 firmware update with the new-ish SN30 Pro.
