Should work, although I'd use an USB stick for this kind of storage size and get a smaller 16 GB SD card. Makes backups easier and I think would be also cheaper.

Retropie has an installation available of Kodi. It is available via the Retropie setup and is a full media center. If you prefer to run a separate install of Kodi on a seperate sd card, use LibreELEC.

You'd probably be better off researching if you need 128GB at all to start with. The fact that some emulators are listed as working does not mean the games are actually 100% playable, so you need to think if you're okay with stunted performance. The demanding systems are probably better dealt with on a single-game basis, checking compatibility wikis and all that.

I'm glad you've gotten it sorted out. I started using .conf files to launch Dos games. What I do is enter dosbox command prompt from RetroPie and start the game from there, keeping track of the command I entered. Then I add those to commands to gamename.conf below [autoexec].

I use the games from eXoDOS collection since it uses the "best" version available. It also has a pre-configured *.conf file as well as all the game files pre-installed in it's own folder. You must make sure to change usescancodes=trueto usescancodes=false to make sure input works correctly. Other information will already be set up such as machine type (machine=vga) which can sometimes cause a headache trying to figure out.

Here is an example Star Trek - 25th Anniversary (1992).conf I based the autoexec off of another CD based game-Fallout 1.

      [sdl] fullscreen=false fulldouble=false fullresolution=original windowresolution=original output=overlay autolock=true sensitivity=100 waitonerror=true priority=higher,normal mapperfile=mapper-0.74.map usescancodes=false [dosbox] language= machine=vga captures=capture memsize=64 [render] frameskip=0 aspect=true scaler=normal2x [cpu] core=auto cycles=max cycleup=500 cycledown=20 [mixer] nosound=false rate=44100 blocksize=2048 prebuffer=10 [midi] mpu401=intelligent device=default config= [sblaster] sbtype=sb16 sbbase=220 irq=7 dma=1 hdma=5 mixer=true oplmode=auto oplrate=44100 [gus] gus=true gusrate=44100 gusbase=240 irq1=5 irq2=5 dma1=3 dma2=3 ultradir=C:\ULTRASND [speaker] pcspeaker=true pcrate=44100 tandy=auto tandyrate=44100 disney=true [joystick] joysticktype=auto timed=true autofire=false swap34=false buttonwrap=true [serial] serial1=dummy serial2=dummy serial3=disabled serial4=disabled [dos] xms=true ems=true umb=true keyboardlayout=none [ipx] ipx=false [autoexec] MOUNT -u C MOUNT C /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pc/ c: IMGMOUNT D /st25/cd/Star Trek 25th.cue -t cdrom cd st25 > NUL STARTREK exit

I haven't tried this .conf yet but what I would do if it didn't work would be to try those commands manually and copy over the changes.

Lastly, sometimes entering setup again is all that is need.

      @mitu
Don't think I´ve fiddled with any permissions.

      but then

On the last post there is a link to another thread with a command that I first tried:

      sudo chown -R pi:pi /opt/retropie/configs

      that's "fiddling with permissions" :)

anyway, one thing you can try: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/FAQ#reset-ownershippermissions-of-homepiretropie-roms

Hahaha, that just shows how much of a noob I am ^^
Thanks, I will try this when I'm back home.

Running with ROMs from an external drive - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Running-ROMs-from-a-USB-drive/. If you remove the drive, then the system will read the ROms from the SD card. Kids mode - you can toggle Kids mode in Emulationstation, the frontend for the listing the games, and only games with the 'Kid Mode' flag will be shown, see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Child-friendly-EmulationStation/#ui-modes

@beggi321 I think @caver01 is right and you didn't actually enable dispmanx. You visited the menu from the Configuration section, but that menu shows something only if you have an emulator that supports dispmanx. If you don't have one installed, then the menu just flashes by and doesn't perform any configuration.

If you didn't do the steps that @caver01 described earlier - and set dispmanx as the video driver for RetroArch - then you didn't actually enabled anything, so there's nothing to disable.

Is there a reason you believe that dispmanx is enabled in your system ?

      Thank you for your suggestions.
What I cannot understand is why the things work with just a restart of the daemon after the game was launched. I havent changed something in a config file, I did not change my source or driver, just restart et voila!

Here the last lines of the dmesg lines, just in case it points someone to a solution. One can see the restarts of the key daemon, probably not very helpful

      [ 1943.989371] input: myrasp-uinput as /devices/virtual/input/input22
      [ 1967.998192] input: myrasp-uinput as /devices/virtual/input/input23
      [ 2005.033208] input: myrasp-uinput as /devices/virtual/input/input24

I will have a look at what you said.

Very nice would be an "example" where somebody is using "udev" (uinput) like I do with success.

This 20 lines example would just open a virtual input device and send a "5" every lets say 10 seconds. The test then is:
Start ES with USB keyboard, start the example via SSH, in ES navigate with the USB keyboard to any "lr-mame2003" game, start the game and wait for the "coin in" event with receiving the next "5".
I say it will not happen. Now do nothing but restart the example and suddenly the coin is in!

This should also be very easily reproducible.

Depending on the age and ability of the kid, it might even be a good idea building it together, or at least letting the kid help his parent. You know, all that bonding and valuing one's own hand's labour thing. :)
