OK, I figured it out... if anyone is interested. It was a power issue all along. The 1tb SSD apparently uses more power than the 240gb SSD .

It was just a matter of using a usb adapter to power the 1tb SSD... Weird that the 1tb SSD draws more power than the 240... I assumed the power draw difference would be trivial between them. Apparently i was wrong. I have no idea if it is related to manufacturer. the 240 is a sandisk, while the 1tb is a PNY.

Looks like i will need seperate power supplies... Can anyone reccomend a better way to combine the seperate power sources into one?

Arcade emulation is a confusing beast when starting out.

Basically ROMs will only work for specific emulator versions. For example, Mame 2003 needs roms from the 0.78 romset. You need a corresponding BIOS file for the same romset as well (neogeo needs to be correct version. This was my downfall for a while with neogeo games)

Familiarize yourself with the different arcade emulators in Retropie and what kind of performance and compatibility you can expect. You need to note the versions of each emulator. Then ensure you have roms from that version's romset.

For what it's worth, so far I have stuck with the FBA emulator. It's got good compatibility and performance. Note that generally speaking, the higher the accuracy of emulation, the worse the performance....

@caver01 You are correct about choosing the games you know and enjoy then just having all of them(like I currently do). It just occurred to me I can use Romlister to determine vertical games.

At-least I was on the right track regarding /etc/profile.d/10-emulationstation.sh

Have you applied an overclock to your SD card?

Using dtoverlay=sdhost,overclock_50=100 will disable your WiFi.

Replace this with dtoverlay=sdtweak,overclock_50=100and your WiFi will come back to life.

Alternatively, if your home network is on a channel greater than 11 you will need to enter your raspi-config (sudo raspi-config) and change your WiFi region to something like GB where these additional channels are supported.

    @gorgar

Hmm, that's odd. Does the pi3 still have trouble with the onboard Bluetooth?
Are you running 3.8.1 with a fresh install?

But yes, I plug the controller in at the home screen of emulation station, wait 30 seconds, then press the P3 button and wait 30 more seconds. Then I disconnect the controller.

Part of the problem may also be the controller needs to be charged more. That was another problem I had. Make sure the controller is charged several hours before trying this.

Understood. I'll take another look at the overlays or doing a fresh install and copying ROMs into place.

As I expected, the overlays works properly at 1080p, so if others are having overlay obscuring part of the screen using a lesser resolution (4:3 in particular), 1080p is one way to fix it. ;-)

Wow... Thank you. For anyone curious, this worked. Updating Rasbian tools packages provided new firmware needed for the image to boot on my Raspberry Pi3....

    Thanks BuZz!

I also must say, that I like the new retropie setup script. With it, I was able to update the base install, then seperately update the underlying OS and Firmware.

Whats really great is that I am now on the 4.0beta, and my Xbox360 Wireless controllers still work perfectly (which they did not when I attempted a fresh install of 3.81)

Seems the new retropie setup script seperated the installation of underlying OS from the base install, while keeping driver updates seperate as well (giving you better choice of what gets installed)

    Cool beans.
