@mattw24 It seems that you have no hotkeys to savestate, and this is why it is not working.
Try it without the trailing 2> /dev/null (this let us see the error messages, if they exist). Just:

grep -R save_state_btn /opt/retropie/configs/all

I suggest you to reconfigure your joystick in emulationstation: press Start and select CONFIGURE INPUT.

Thanks for all the help @Floob. I noticed while setting up a second controller that emulation station seems to reasign A and B any time you set up a new controller and go in and out of an emulator. Is this a bug if so I would think it needs to be fixed not to cause anymore confusion. Seems to only happen with these controllers. I fixed it by manually updating es_input.cfg but I had to do it twice because of this.

ohhh baby! that 4.0 is awesome.. a lot cleaner interface than that of the 3.x version.

I found a different rom that works perfect.

You need the file disksys.rom and it needs to be in the bios folder. Fceumm cuts off video on the left and right side of the screen. Nestopia does not. I personally would use nestopia. Same with nes games. (Unless you are using retroachievements for nes games which only works in fceumm. Fds games dont support retroachievements so i would use nestopia)

For others who have this issue, I figured it out.
The config file for individual emulators is in home/pi/.config/retroarch/config
deleted the config file and all is working fine.

@herb_fargus I'll think I start with a fresh image again, I don't recognize a thing. Suddenly anti-aliasing is on (should never have been invented) and emulators don't recognize hot key combinations.

.7z is a compressed format, you need to open that and take out the compressed file.

As for the case I'm using, it was a combo case with fan I found on ebay for a couple dollars. It doesn't look the best now that it's in my hands, but it beats having the board laying on the table.

I will have to double check when I get home, but I am pretty sure it is Mame4all-pi, but I will confirm.

I configured the buttons holding them down on launch yes. Same for Emulation Station. it shows as Generic USB Joypad Controller when I set it up in Emulation Station by holding the buttons down.

That is how I was trying to fix it. I used Tab on they keyboard and went to PLayer 1 Start and Coin. I pressed Enter and then pressed the button I want it to be. It then accepts that button and says J1 Button 5 or whatever it is (again just trying to remember)

I will try going in and resetting it to defaults and trying again.

I had to move everything from one build to another as I didn't like the design, but I had the same problem on the first build. All buttons were left the same. I will try that, and also look into the retroarch.cfg file and see.

I am 99.9% sure that I don't have the same button set elsewhere but I will double check again and get back to you.

Is the issue in Emulation Station or the games themselves, i.e. in RetroArch?

Oddly enough i used to get that message of what emulator im using but now i dont ever see it i dont know why. It only stays black then it goes to the loading of the game.

@dankcushions Tried that. No change. It's really weird. I'm going to try killing the overclock and see if that matters for some reason.
