For those want to testdrive the navigation (Joy-right/Select) and launch game (Start) also for the image slideshow screen saver -see suggestion 4 above- are invited to do so:

@joesnow81 well you have the sources, the wiki/docs and the helpful guys in this forum. A comfortable start position I would say.

Didn't realise it was quite so simple. Updated to 2.9.1 and can see the extra setting within the screensaver settings. All working perfectly.

Should it help anyone in the future the steps I went through were

In emulationstation, go to Tools > RetroPie Setup.
Once in, select Update RetroPie-Setup script and select yes to update it.
Now select Manage packages, followed by Manage core packages, select emulationstation and finally Update from binary.
Once that's done restart EmulationStation

I discovered a little workaround if anyone is interested. It works for me because I don’t use video clips on my game menus.
Simply put the video you want to act as screensaver in a folder of your choice, and link it to a game using the metadata options. Of course that video will be displayed when you scroll over the game, but it will also be picked up by the random video screensaver.

There's no GUI configuration at the moment, but you can use the scripting features in Emulationstation and run a script on sleep/wake to turn off/on the display - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/EmulationStation/#scripting.

I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner! The information always seems accurate when you're the one typing it! 🤣🤣

The screensaver displays videos just fine - I don't have an issue with black/blank screens. It is the game information it won't display. On my 3B+ I have set "Show Game Info On Screensaver" - ALWAYS and it displays the game name and system. On Windows it does not.

I should also mention that I'm using the Showcase theme on both my 3B+ and Win10.

@mitu I never tried playing them with omxplayer from command line i am sorry still new to all of this. I been working on this image from scratch for a few months now and just when i thought i was done i went and updated the script and this is what happened. The videos do play in the gamelist previews just fine. its when the screen saver kicks in is when i get the issue. This image is for an arcade1up cab and i use the screensaver option so that in can just run when i am not using it.

For me its stuck on video that u can see on loop (not white screen with sound).
In anycase i switch the screensaver to Images and it fix the problem (kinda solve).
Try to find your white screen video and switch it for sure.
If u find another solution will love to know

@Efriim Another reason for me to not use the auto save is that one function of my DIY cabinet is to entertain my guests, and for that the games should start normally at their title screen, not somewhere I or others left them. But in general I like it that there is such a feature. 👍

MeGui also has a useful batch convert feature, but perhaps the easiest way is to use FFmpeg with a bat file. This is what I use, I copied it from some helpful person from a forum years ago; I wish I could credit them because I have used it quite a lot...

Copy and paste that into a txt editor then save as a .bat file. You will need to put ffmpeg.exe into the same folder as the videos with the bat file, double click the bat file and the videos will be put into a "new files" folder.

You can change some of the parameters: the -crf value is set at 28 which will make a small file size but low quality, if you want higher quality change the 28 to 22.

@vinz2k It depends - do you hear the audio from the video ? Do your gamelist also have empty video tags ? I think the fix should be in the 2.8.3rp version, so maybe you're experiencing another problem.

Aaaaah, yes, that's a good idea!! I did do a new scrape for one system using Skyscraper rather than using the built-in scrapers. That would explain why is seems to be "looking" for a video, but not finding it -- except that one day, that one time, where it DID find it and it worked as expected. Because Skyscraper adds the <video /> tag to each game.

I'll delete every instance of <video /> and see if that works.
