    thanks for sharing that, wonderful game! And my mind is still boggling from all the factoids. I didn't know that it snowed in the Sahara on 18th Feb 1979, first snowfall recorded there in living memory.

    I too would like to see better support for memory cards. The current "one memory card per game" works, but is limited, and prevents certain games from working to their full potential. Any games that allowed trading or competition between 2 players via memory card, such as YuGiOh or Monster Rancher, lose a great deal of play value if theres no way to mount a card in slot 2. Then theres the games that make use of other games saves on the same card, usually giving bonuses or unlocking content for having another game in the series (Suikoden comes to mind), or by the same developer/publisher on the card.

    said in Overclocking to play MvC2, Soul Edge, Virtua Figther and more.:

    's a cut of at late 90's-games. 3D-based games don't work, some start up but are choppy in the graphics and sound. Like Tekken and Soul Edge. And a 2D game like Marvel vs Capcom 2 doesn't even start, which is sad because I really wanted to play that one ;)
    I was thinking about overclocking my RPI, will that help? I've ordered some cooling sinks and a case with a fan. Could this let me play those games without any problems? And is there any danger with overclocking? Could I damage my RPI?

    For my first full-sized arcade cabinet a few years back, I installed a way overpowered spare gaming rig. My goal was also 100% arcade perfect gameplay. I tried the arcade versions of all the games you listed, like Tekken and MvC2, and they all stuttered and had sound issues. So I accepted defeat and ran the console versions of those games. The problem is not hardware, it's just that the MAME emulation of these games (starting from roughly the late 90's on) has never been perfect. Most console emulators work at a higher level and don't try to reproduce all of the hardware in software the way MAME does, which is why the console emulators often offer much smoother gameplay.

    Overclocking your RPI3 can't fix MAME's issues with these games, but it can lead to a broken RPI. Also consider that once you get to the early 3D era of gaming, the home consoles were generally more powerful than (or the same as) arcade hardware, whereas the opposite had been true for most of the past 20 years. So while there's a huge and noticeable difference between, say, the arcade and SNES versions of SF2, this isn't true of the Dreamcast vs. arcade VF3.

    @caver01, I got it working. I used clrmamepro to convert the rom to mame4all (advmame conversions didn't work) .

    Thanks for your help.

  • Can actual TV/screen size play a roll in stuttering? (Mostly N64)

    Actual size of the screen will not matter. The resolution is the same for every screen.

    N64 seems "easy" (especially when one sees PSP and PSX run so well) but the hardware and emulation is one of the toughest around for it.

    If you follow the guides you can get a very good experience but considering the age of the console, unless a miracle happens, this is pretty much what one can expect for now.

    Haven't tried then, but I use OEM Playstation 1 or 2 controllers with the dual playstation controller adapter. You can often find them at thrift stores or yard sales really cheap: Especially Playstation 1 controllers. The big plus is a relatively long cord (and getting extensions is also pretty cheap).

    Tell me more about this "dual playstation controller adapter"

    I have one of these generic units:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AATQ0Y/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687502&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000F6BGXY&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0JZXY2GY2B0YWHN2ZKBA

    I bought it because I tried an ancient playstation to usb converter bought at Radio Shack in about 1998 and it worked out of the box. The dual version works fine as long as both controllers match (can't mix 1 with analog sticks and another without). You can configure each controller independently, but it does not like to switch between analog and not analog controllers. Quality of construction is also pretty bad. Mine only worked in one side when I got it because of cold solder joints (I ordered from eBay to save an extra dollar or two so go figure). Other than construction, I can't complain. I can hot-swap controllers in ES (most emulators don't like hot swapping in-game though).

    My biggest beef with the Buffalo clones and in fact ANY of the clone controllers is the super short cord and lack of quality feel in some examples. Playstation controllers can be had cheap and were built to last. Plus they have long cords and extension cords are readily available cheaply. I like being able to stretch a cord 10-12 feet to the couch since I have not been able to get a wireless controller to work reliably. For folks that have a PS1 or PS2 controller handy, it's a cheap way to get Retropie up and running with minimal hassle.

    The usb thing worked perfectly! And a bargain on eBay - I may pick up a few just in case things go pear shaped.

    Thanks again :)

    side scrollers, fighting games, racing games...I loved Championship Sprint when I was a kid, but Zaxxon and Pac-Man were favorites along with the Star Wars vector line game...

    @Codeyvh I don't have the original StarCraft game so I haven't been able to test it and it seems nobody has been able to do an in depth tutorial on the stratagus engine. In theory it should work. I think StarCraft can probably be played in dosbox but I'm doubtful it will be a playable framerate

    @strandpolo

    Hello. I'm considering building one of these badboys to serve as a retro-party-machine. Is it possible playing Mario Kart,

    i've played 4 player on mk64 fine using the mupen64plus-glesn64 plugin at 1080p. it's stuttery on some levels, but i think it might be better at lower resolutions.

    Mario Party, Super Smash Bros,

    not sure. briefly played smash in 2 player on mupen64plus-GlideN64 and it was a bit choppy even at low resolutions. i think i tried the other plugins and they worked better but had weird graphical glitches like everyone having no eyes :D

    Micro Machines 64

    not tried but micro machines on the psx emulator is pretty much the same game i think, and is fine 4 player.

    Bomberman

    various versions are perfect. my personal favourite is bomberman party on psx. not sure about n64 version but there's better versions so :)

    Crash Team Racing and Crash Bash

    if these are psx they will be fine on a pi3

    :)

    I dream one day of building my own cabinet - just like an orginal, but without the brake pedal ;)

    @Hydro create a file /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/VenomLimitedPS3PS4ArcadeJoystick.cfg

    input_device = "Venom Limited PS3/PS4 Arcade Joystick" input_driver = "udev" input_r_btn = "7" input_save_state_btn = "7" input_l2_btn = "4" input_start_btn = "9" input_exit_emulator_btn = "9" input_l_btn = "5" input_load_state_btn = "5" input_up_btn = "h0up" input_a_btn = "2" input_b_btn = "1" input_reset_btn = "1" input_down_btn = "h0down" input_r2_btn = "6" input_right_btn = "h0right" input_state_slot_increase_btn = "h0right" input_x_btn = "3" input_menu_toggle_btn = "3" input_select_btn = "8" input_enable_hotkey_btn = "8" input_y_btn = "0" input_left_btn = "h0left" input_state_slot_decrease_btn = "h0left"

    ps i think the switch on the stick has to be in ps3 mode for it to work properly

    @bidinou video_smooth or a shader could still be used in pcsx's 'hd' mode. or you could turn on per-game core options and only turn on enchanced resolution for 3D games, and create per-game cfgs for the 2d ones turning on shaders, etc.
