it connected and worked once. Upon trying again after reboot, It would say connected and the blue led would be solid, but ES reported no gamepads found.

try to disconnect all your game pads, leave only a keyboard and mouse and then start kodi.

If you use libretro emulators (the lr-xxxxxx) variant, follow @iconrumble link and watch the video about core input remapping. It is possible to remap the buttons without fiddling with configurations files and without affecting emulationstation's navigation menu buttons. ;)

@thrussmeister any. it depends on what heading you want it to appear under in emulationstation, and all those emulators are capable of running it (romset MIGHT cause problems in none-mame2003 cores but in my experience neogeo roms are more forgiving). the default emulator for the neogeo folder is lr-fba-next I believe. gngeo is only used if you manually configure it.

Exiting ES takes a while if you have lots of roms and you have used the scraper - see https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/FAQ#why-does-shut-down-and-reboot-take-ages

Might be another problem though too - have you tried a fresh image to rule out a hardware issue (power / cabling etc). You could post via pastebin.com or similar the output from dmesg and the contents of /boot/config.txt, /var/log/syslog, /tmp/runcommand.log and ~/.emulationstation/es_log.txt

@mancity try and compress the img file with 7-zip or similar, it will certainly reduce the file size...

Thanks Floob! Believe it or not, I had already come across that smartretro post by you earlier today while googling-about. my neogeo.zip should contain all of the required files. I even downloaded the uni-bios from that site linked on there and threw those in for an unsuccessful try.

As for the romset, I used the dat file provided on the wiki page to create this set actually. I would like to believe it is all correctly named and the checksums all match, according to clrmamepro.

Its not a huge deal, I just really wanted to try out the emulator alongside the three builds of FBA already on here.

can't advise without a log (eg /tmp/runcommand.log) - but you are using the system in a way it was not designed, so you will have to debug it yourself.

I decided to give this one more try - i don't think there would be automatic permission to write into the folder that the mame.ini is configured to save to /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-mame2010/sta.

If i change

state_directory sta

to

state_directory /home/pi/RetroPie/SAVES (i know there is permission to write here)

should that attempt to save to <root>/home/pi/RetroPie/SAVES or will it be looking for /home/pi/RetroPie/SAVES inside the folder it is already in?

Can I use <root> as i have above in the .ini file, or don't i need to?

Yes that's true, AdvMAME is way more flexible than I ever thought and it's a staple system for me now in addition to the others. My plan is definitely to bump up to lr-mame2003 but I have everything working perfectly right now and really need to see what I am missing between the two that would motivate me to build a new set from scratch and sort it as I don't like dumping a full set when I will play only a fraction of them.

@thrussmeister There's a UK based website that has the current version of MAME and also what they call a rollback torrent. You can rollback to ANY version of MAME with a few clicks. It's extremely slick for RetroPie that supports so many different version sets.
