@mitu said in BBC Micro on Pi400 running RetroPie:

replace the path with the full path (/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/bbcmicro. I don't think ~ is expanded here.

You were quite correct. Putting in the full path made a difference. On lauching Emulationstation I got the BBC Micro option with the Acorn logo and artwork. When I selected that I initially got a prompt asking me which emulator I wanted to use (BBC Micro or BBC Master). I selected BBC Micro and the emulator started and the first .ssd "disc" was loaded. I checked, the extension was lower case for both files, but it is worth bearing in mind.

I made some further progress by setting up a second system profile for the BBC Master. I didn't get prompted to select the emulator this time and it took me a while to find the configuration file where this is configured. All that was needed was to change the 'default' setting to point to the already configured Master option. There seems to be no artwork provided for the master so I ended up creating some on a similar theme using the artwork for the Micro as a starting point.

I encountered one rather unusual problem with the artwork. I used Inskape to edit the .svg artwork files supplied with the emulator and discovered that Emulationstation does not show any text that was added using fonts (XML <font> tag). Perhaps that explans why all text in the artwork has been created with each individual letter created as a <path> object., i.e. a polygon. When I followed this original approach, drawing each individual letter (which took some time), everything then appeared as it should. I do find it a little odd though.

The good news is that I now have both emulators working from RetroPie.

The Master didn't like one of the items on the demo disc - a demo of some window manager. Maybe I need to select the 512 emulation as opposed to the 128? Will need to experiment with that. In the meantime I will need to do some work to convert my existing .mmb file to .ssd files. I will then be able to try some games.

Any idea where I might have gone wrong? 😅

Did you delete any configuration file(s) hoping you'll 'reset' the mapping ?

Sounds like you've deleted es_input.cfg from EmulationStation's configuration folder, in which case follow the steps in the docs to reset your inputs and re-configure your gamepad once again.

Tried 2 different HDMI cables and same cable works perfectly with the main 4.8 version I’ve got on a 2nd SD card. These issues seem to be with the bullseye beta images but don’t think it’s a RetroPie problem as Batocera had the exact same issues on their newest versions for the Pi3B.

@DedHead Arcade Database Mazer Blazer lists the rom as status: preliminary for current mame and last changes where for mame 0.190 - so unsure wether or when it may became promoted to good.

@scaramoosh you do realize the pi5 has only been out a short while. The dev don't get it earlier then the rest of us. They got them when we did.

So it takes time to get a image done. It took almost a year after the pi4 was out before a official image was released by Retropie.

So it will be about that long for the pi5 my guess.

It should work, but the preferred method I think is now via an integrated overlay in order get support for KMS/DRM. You'd better ask in the RP forums with the exact display model and make.

I solved the issue. Apparently the order of the XML tags inside "system" is relevant. Looks like I was simply creating a new text behind the background... After moving it to below the background image tag, it finally showed up.
Here's the final code (after the background image tag)

    <text name="by" extra="true"> <pos>0.85 0.969</pos> <color>ffffff80</color> <fontPath>./art/font.ttf</fontPath> <fontSize>0.02</fontSize> <text>hello world</text> </text>

    @mitu

Hi mitu thanks for that info.

Apologies for not specifying the correct info as I am very new to retropie and struggling with some of the clever stuff. As I built retro pie four weeks ago still exciting about playing games with the game pad but naturally want to make it more enjoyable palying with the joystick. I will check the speed link FAQ and jtest instructions you provided and report back. I get the impression from your responses that this should work so its good news I just need to work out how to configure this.

    My retropie build is:

Pre-made images for the Raspberry Pi
The latest pre-made image of RetroPie is v4.8
    Released March 14, 2022.
Running on Raspberrypie 4 with 4Gb RAM.

    Regards
    Dario

Hello! I realised that maybe you guys are assuming that my usb keyboard is a gaming keyboard. It isn't. I think I'll have to buy an actual video game controller eventually. Thanks anyway for your guys' help!

@Tango You can look in the Core options or the Controller(s) menu, both from the RetroArch's quick menu. I think Mame2003 has a core option for spinners - https://docs.libretro.com/library/mame_2003/#mousetrackballanalog-controller-support.

@mitu Thank you for that link. I had been looking for that information in the User Manual but couldn't see it. The closely packed layout and font do not help. I will have a look for .vkm files. My system seems to be using the Business (UK) keyboard layout, but there should not be much difference to the US one.

@sleve_mcdichael said in Going from Pi 3 to Pi 4 and keeping all settings, high scores, and so on:

Yeah, probably the controller profile was in this "configs" folder, which didn't get copied over with the other three.

I did that - synced the config directory. I've run into a problem and, since I felt it really wasn't a part of this topic, I started another thread on it. In short, all the controls on my arcade cabinet work except the spinner. I'm hoping there isn't some timing issue or something with the Pi4 that doesn't get along with the spinner.

@sleve_mcdichael said in Going from Pi 3 to Pi 4 and keeping all settings, high scores, and so on:

Aye, then yeah will have to copy them over the new system.

One thing I just love about Pis is that you can do that. You can pull a card or USB stick out of one and plug it into the other and it'll work fine - or you can pull the "drive" out of one and easily plug it in another and copy all the data to the new system.

Okay I think I sorted it out.

I edited my xml files to remove any absolute paths and replace them with the old /home/<user>/RetroPie/roms/... equivalent line.
Then I deleted the <folder> lines from the bottom of the file.

    Everything works again.
