How do I contribute my own Screenshot Archive to Emulation Station, and what determines whether Emulation Station gets screensots or box art?

@jamrom2 What about how Emulation determines what to download? Currently, it downloads only box art.

If you want, you can manipulate the files that ES uses to point at images and use whatever you want. Each theme does its own style, some use boxart, screenshots, movies, marquis, etc. But as far as putting your actual images out for others to use, you'd have to submit them to game databases and see if they'll use them. Moby games, Emunation, GamesDB to name a few.

I customized all of the graphics in my theme to use what I personally selected. I enhanced a lot of the graphics and picked the best of each from many different sources. I only use boxart, no screens or videos.

It can be whatever you want.

@sirhenrythe5th Hm I tried it, like in this thread

      https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/16987/msdos-dosbox-games-how-do-you-create-sh-files-to-point-to-the-correct-file-name/3

But it jumps back to ES. I didn't know if I have to make the .sh executable, I tried both. Would you please post an example?

@aaronc75 Could you provide more information about how you have setup Skyscraper? That path to the media looks strange. It seems you have relative paths turned on, but I don't understand why it says ./downloaded_images as the media path.

What are the permissions of the ./downloaded_images folder itself?

@VictimRLSH MidnightCommander mc should support much storage devices. So if you can link a BT device as storage it will possible work.

@thelostsoul Thanks for giving me an idea of what might be wrong. Unfortunately, the only extra micro SD card I have is 16 GB, while the one in my pi is 32 GB. It's not really that big of a deal with the screenshots though, so maybe sometime in the future I'll get another sd card and try that out. Thanks for the help.

@spudsmctoole make sure that folder has all the correct permissions. I put my screenshot folder in /home/pi/ and it works best there. Had issues in another location I tried.

So after alot of google'ing and scraping i think the problem vanished, i tried to use the Universal XML Scraper and it seems to have successfully overwritten the buggy boxart stuff, never find out why the problem started though ^^

@Potatopops9 you would do better to open a new thread detailing your issue.

@nicky_s14 Check if you have a snapshot.png in the /home/pi folder. It's not the folder where raspi2png is located, is the folder where the command was executed.

Update to this - I'm 99% sure I've not changed anything regarding screenshots since reporting this, butwhen trying it today, all but one RetroArch core (PrBoom) is now saving screenshots correctly in the directory I specify in the retroarch.cfg per system.

I had updated RetroArch on my setup from the RetroPie-Setup script, so my best guess is that this was an issue that has since been resolved in RetroArch.

Only one that still doesn't save correctly is PrBoom (Doom) - they still go into the /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/screenshots directory.

      Thanks everyone.

So... i found this topic searching for the same question paffley did... and while the solution for him was to use the "marquee" category, I wanted instead to keep marquees showing, and displaying screenshot and boxart on my theme's video view for the games that doesn't have video. So, I was in need of a third set of displaying artwork... and after searching a lot, I found it on the development fork of EmulationStation!

For those that, as me, ended up here, here it goes the "workaround":

you have to install "emulationstation-dev" instead of the default "emulationstation" for it; then you need to change the resource (probably a repeated "image" field on the same position and size of the "video" field) on your theme to the "thumbnail" tag (i used ComicBook theme for this example, on the video view); lastly, after scraping (i used skyscraper), on gamelist.xml, change your boxart XML tag to "image" and your screenshot XML tag to "thumbnail" (i did a replacing macro on notepad++).

Tested here and works flawlessly! You don't have to switch exactly the same XML tags, it's only an example of how I did mine.
