@moi403 If you are connected to the internet you can try this. First you need to install "rdate". Then place this line in file /etc/rc.local. "sudo rdate -n -4 time-a.nist.gov &" just before the "exit 0" line. Sometimes it will take a few times to connect. If you have trouble connecting you can go to this site and try other time servers. "http://tf.nist.gov/tf-cgi/servers.cgi" I hope this works for you. At any rate it's free!

@dankcushions I've not been on here much over the weeks so I didn't know there was a system in place of how games where selected. Over at another forum I'm a member of, it's whoever posts the thread first. Sorry about that.

I guess I could try streaming on YouTube, not tried that from my phone before.

I spend most of my time on the arcades, but some of the traders are quite good as well as the cab sellers.
I do Blackpool as well although they are both a hell of a drive.

I like the look of sociable soccer so I might try that as well.

@herb_fargus said in TV Shows and movies recommendations:

just watched hunt for the wilderpeople

I saw that last night. It was odd, but I enjoyed it. It was made by the guy that made "What We Do In The Shadows", and also the new Thor movie.

Thanks for the detailed steps @meleu. I followed them and the controllers started working!

So, as a recap, here are the issues I faced and how they were resolved:
(outside of this forum post) I installed the latest retropie and found that it did not correctly generate entries in retroarch-joypads; that resulted in in-game keypads not working, and somehow the keyboard esc button being mapped to the left dpad. I resolved that by reimaging the retropie.

I installed the latest retropie and found that my 8bitdo controller wasn't doing anything in the games. I was able to get the dpad to work by restarting the rpi.

I found that the 8bitdo controller's dpad worked in games, and the Start button pressed A. Nothing else worked. I resolved this by disabling the 8bitdo hack menu option in retropie's settings.

This issue is now resolved thanks to @meleu's help.

@kbronctjr I think it's very difficult to quantify which is faster without a per-game comparison between original hardware, a single reliable method of ripping the CDs to images, PBP without compression, and PBP with compression.

I wonder if the advantage comes from CD images ripped in strange ways causing very slow loading and even jerky streaming or broken audio, but downloading a PBP which was ripped with a different method removes that root cause as a factor.

    Oh well, whatever works :)

I had a what the heck moment and decided to try Rpix86 with this game last night. I was blown away by the performance improvement this emulator has over DosBox. I estimate I observed a 2-3 times speed increase over DosBox on the same Pi, bringing it into Pentium territory, which I totally did not expect because all material such as documentation and forum discussion suggest it operates at the speed of a "~20 MHz 486". The emulator is not without its problems, the cursor moved really choppily in the menu's, almost as if the emulator wasn't receiving input consistently while in menu's. Also the music did not work, only the sound effects, which is a big problem for me because I love the chip tunes in this game. Finally the game actually crashed on me once during my brief play session (taking me back to the days when I was running the same game on actual hardware, lol) I chalk this up to the likely conclusion that the Rpix86 emulator is not nearly as "complete" as DosBox. This still showed me what kind of performance with DOS emulation is actually possible on a RISC architecture like ARM and I sincerely hope this emulator is developed further (or a more optimized DosBox derivative is released). I noticed there hasn't been a new release of Rpix86 in a year or so.

Does anyone have any insight on how to possibly resolve the problems above? I'm most concerned about the music not playing, the other issues are secondary (but would still be nice to fix).
