@cyperghost thanks for the confirmation, I guess I'll have to screw around with it some more.

Take a look at the Configuration hierarchy. You can have the overlays per-system if you add them to the system's retroarch.cfg file. For individual games, you can use the game override in RetroArch to set the overlays.

@hubbachubba looks like you're having problems for editing scripts on windows and then trying to run them on Linux.

Something like what this guy was having here.

Also, keep in mind what I posted on the OP:

UPDATE: The method described here became outdated after @pjft implemented custom collections to EmulationStation.

I'll keep the post for historical reasons, but I recommend you to use the ES custom collection feature instead.

@Global-Moderators could you guys please lock this thread? The trick in the OP became outdated and this topic exists only for historical reasons. Thanks in advance.

@mattrixk lol I never thought of that. But yeah a more generic wallpaper makes more sense. Good thing is that it can easily be switched to something else. ;)

@Rookervik: That is completely understandable and you have my apologies. I look forward to seeing it in its completed state when you are ready to release it to the world.

@caver01 Your link actually dropped me off at the most recent post and I scrolled back from there. While the last picture I see is definitely more scanline than the first screenshots, the second to last still shows a lot of pixel separation.

I guess I'd have to see ut in action on my own television before I can tell if it's really more enjoyable than the current setup of crt + smoothing (yes @BobHarris, I do that too now), which is why I figured I'd just try it if it ever got into a RetroPie update.
