@vmkamhi 3rd party images aren't supported here. Nobody knows what the configurations are and how to solve so called problematic 3rd party images. You should start from scratch with the official Retropie image and transfer over all the games from your current card to the new fresh image.

From the manual from the person that built the pie for me:

"Both items are equally as important to back up. The SD card contains the “system” and the hard drive contains the “games.”"

@mitu Problem solved. As I suspected, it was something stupid that I was doing that simply wasn't making its way across in communication.

I thought pressing [F4] just quit the controller config and would take me to ES. I didn't realize it was that which was kicking me to the CLI. facepalm

Everything is good now. Thanks for your willingness to help.

@steptoe said in Booting from SD Card with SSD Storage vs full SSD Install:

You DO have to leave the SD card in though, as it reads the boot sequence from the SD card before passing all control to the external SSD or hard drive

No, that's not required on the Pi4.

Thank you for your in-dept pros and cons, I appreciate it a lot!
Funny you mentioned the USB-Hub because I have been thinking about that as well. How does it work out when you play like 4 people on the Hub, is there some issues with the controllers?

nope! in fact i’ve played with 5 before. it being powered may be important as excessive USB power drain can cause issues with undervolting.

You mentioned about the bottleneck of many games on the emulationstation, which Raspberry pi have you been using when you saw that? I have the 4 B version. This is my first Raspberry pi so I can't compare it unfortunately with anything...... I haven't faced any issues with the loading but yes I don't have like 100 roms hehe.

i have heard of slow boots with pi3 for sure. however this’ll anecdotal stuff from years of support. i’ve not heard of it in a while. my pi4 takes a few minutes to boot - i have several 1000 roms, but i keep it on 24/7

@dankcushions perfect! That saved me a lot of time since I deleted some content before I started to think of possible consequences :)

@Crush said in SD Card running out of space.:

One last question if i may, is there a way to do the opposite of expanding the SD card? IE: strip the unused space.

Yes - see pi-shrink, it's not included in RetroPie.
