Circling back around to this post after a bit just to update anyone who may be having the same issue that I was and put some finality to the issue. The issue was with the Xbox One Bluetooth controller having some driver compatibility issues. I believe the solution is still a WIP, but atar-axis wrote a driver called xpadneo that works amazingly well with Xbox One in Bluetooth mode. It solved all of my controller issues. Jstest now shows the dev input perfectly, and includes rumble support. Really great stuff!

Here is another fact, I started a new image from scratch and moved exactly the same amount of roms, the system is duplicated manually in a fresh install and it takes 2.84 seconds more to load ES on the new PI3B+ running Retropie 4.4 than the PI 3B running 3.9, its akward, but true. I have an intro video wich overlays the ES loading screen and now I have to make it that time longer because Retropie 4.4. with a PI3B+ takes more time loading.

Thanks for digging through this issue, I guess the new 3B+ is more finicky about measuring the power consumption.

@andrewh The Go binary installation is downloaded from https://storage.googleapis.com/, so you might want to whitelist it in your PiHole installation. Glad you got it sorted out.

It's stopped working on the image based on Stretch Beta too now... Hmm.

The RetroPie image is based on Raspbian Lite (Stretch or Jessie, depending on which image you choose), so you would be better to install the Stretch beta image provided and then update the binaries. This was unrelated to Stretch and has today been fixed in RetroPie-Setup.

@mitu Oh I'm aware it's just a front end, I've tried doing RetroPie for my brother in law as a Christmas gift (which I got working easily enough).

And I didn't think to try Github's instructions, I guess I just assumed the main page would work. Tired and ready for bed. Thanks, I'll give it a shot later.

@danieltak Don't believe everything you read on the internet. What's the big rush to get it working on Stretch anyway? What is it going to give you that Jessie doesn't? Stick with what works until RetroPie has been fully tested to work with Stretch and gets an official release and support.
I'm not offended, I just think it's odd that someone would see an error message saying a certain OS version is not supported and then come to the official forum seeking support!
