Just to mention it: AdvanceMame has this great feature "auto level volume" which prevents me from running to the volume control on my setup as i dont have a remote control for my 2.1 logitech-soundsystem :)

If you have trouble with your controller, try re-setting the gamepad configuration and re-map it again in EmulationStation.

Okay, thanks - it could be possible, that I did a setting in RPi setup script by mistake. I played around with that - and maybe did not put it back later. This is a real good advice for my performance issue - thanks

Edit: Oh holy man! This was the point. I thought it's only a booster for my slow graphics - but it fixed the installation issue! After that modification, I also got the possibility to install RetroArch by binaries (which was not shown before). Now the installation works. Thanks a lot.

@Rascas the issue is max_framebuffers=2 on retropie. It should be max_framebuffers=1 when using a single display. This resolved my issue.
Tried all different cables, monitor inputs, monitor outputs, rebuilding libcec. only solution was max_framebuffers=1.

I'll accept maybe it's an oddity with my display, but since making that change i've been unable to reproduce it.

Think the corruption was perhaps bad luck... but I've seen a few reports of recent kernel/raspbian updates causing this.

That was generated by the system, I only changed it after which fixed it.

Just a little explanation for this: FAT32 (vfat in Linux) is a Windows file system that doesn't support Linux file permissions and ownerships. Those are determined by the mount options (here: uid=1000,gid=1000,fmask=0022,dmask=0022) and are immutable by commands like chmod or chown. Thus, the above error message ist normal behaviour for a vfat mount.

Without any error info/message, it's difficult to guess what's wrong.
Can you post the contents of the /dev/shm/runcommand.log file, after you've started a game ?

@cmdcolin Select is mapped by default to 'Coin Insert' in arcade emulators. Without it, you wouldn't be able to start a game.
