So I've managed to find the issue. it seems the ps3controller driver was causing the issues.

I only used it as I couldn't get sixaxis to find my controller. Looks like I need to try and get this working.

But don't forget to set the default emulator of arcade to lr-mame2003-plus via the runcommand menu.

Probably lots of them, including the original PS3 gamepad.

@radudek332 if the other games are loading but not Mario 64, you either have a bad rom or you should try a different core. I think Mupen64-next is the best

@YJK sounds like you are running from the desktop which is not correct. How did you install RetroPie?

You will run into issues later on with this approach. You need to match the specific ROM set version to the arcade emulator you want to use. This is detailed in depth in the docs.

@mitu no problem, I’m working around it with the other emulator for now. I’ve not tested what it’s like but I’m sure I can hold on! Thanks!

Get a SDcard testing tool (like H2testw or F3X) and check if your card is ok. If not, then you'll need a different SD card, otherwise try again to re-image.
You can also have issues from the power supply - the 3B model needs a 5V, 2.5A power supply - if you're using a simple charger I strongly advise to get a proper one.

Apart from that configuration, there's little to do to make it looks like 2 players. Make sure you've put everything on one line in that file. It may also be that the VID:PID combo is different for your encoder. Can you run

cat /proc/bus/input/devices

and post the output here ?

@dankcushions Yeah I used the TAB button to get into that setup menu, setup the controllers, but I don't see a save function anywhere. So when I leave the game, the settings go away and have to be re-entered to when you play that game again. That's the problem I am having with ADVMame and others. I'll try manually creating the file but as I've stated, complete novice and not sure if I'm able :D But totally willing to try.
