Just did that on my RP4 today (fresh install from your 4.7 image, not trying the new 4.8 I just noticed today yet until bugs are worked out) and it's STILL giving me a 2 year old version of mame2003... Nov 2 2020, 1.8.8.

      4.7 release date: 2nd nov 2020

Sorry, missed your post when I replied earlier. So updating 'from source' does NOT give you the newest version? I thought that was the entire point of updating from source like I just did?

1.8.8 is the retroarch version. retropie locks to a tested version of retroarch, so to update it you first have to update the retropie-setup script - option S here:

      https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/540857/106713057-e03e2b00-65c7-11eb-9529-766986334e8b.png

then update retroarch in packages > core > retroarch (update via binary or source)

the style of the menus depends on the version of retroarch AND the version of mame2003, but i imagine your version of mame2003 is now up to date. verbose logs remove all doubt and tell us all the versions involved.

This (talking about the RP4 still) also definitely updated since launch of 4.7, no matter what that date says. Like my original post here was about, complete with screenshots, this game wasn't working on the Zero 2, but WAS working on the RP4 (4.7, updated to 4.7.3ish, with 'from binary' mame2003). Like I just posted about, when I updated the RP4 'from source' earlier today (running 'update retropie setup script' first), it now has the same graphical glitches the Zero 2 has... so now I'm completely and utterly confused... ;)

i don't know about the emulation capability of mame2003 so i don't know, but it sounds like the current version has some glitches. you should supply a verbose log to see if there's any clues: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Runcommand/#launch-with-verbose-logging

So RetroPie/EmuStation runs at whatever resolution is being suggested by the hdmi connection?
As its working fine at HD when I start the desktop instead.
Does emustation use a different graphics driver than the desktop?

EDIT: Ok - So its the actual raspberry pi board that is somehow at fault. Iv'e crosschecked the sd card with another pi4 I had and with the suspected monitor and it's definitely the first rpi.

Switched to pictures only (cover box and screenshot). Turned OMX back on. Thanks for the explanation.

Not just you. Tested it out myself and the shadows are broken and performance is worse for me as well. Reverted back to a several months old version I had saved locally and it works fine.

Any idea on how can I revert to your version? I do not have a backup :/

@VictimRLSH I figured there wasn’t much of a gain between the two. I only went with the 8g since I was jumping from a raspberry pi 3b and figured I may as well spend a little extra and have more ram. I plan to use a few different cards to experiment a bit. This wasn’t meant to replace my custom Ryzen desktop build, this is more for fun. Already setup a desktop environment last night. I’m interested in overclocking this to see how it handles different applications. I already know the overclock will definitely help in emulating Dreamcast and 64.

      Found a solution:

      720 Degrees (revision 4) on lr-mame2003 (I think I unzipped 720 and 720 rev 4, merged the contents then rezipped as 720.zip).

Paperboy (revision 3) also on lr-mame2003.

Both work very nicely now, with no nasty tearing/glitching effects.

@jacek We don't support 3rd party images - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. You're free to try the RetroPie image from https://retropie.org.uk/download and report back if you can reproduce the problem.
