      nd on the home screen

It's already in Showcase. The theme folder name is called "pixel".

In your es_systems.cfg file, you can change the <theme> to pixel or just rename the folder to whatever your es_systems.cfg file is using.

That should have it show up on the main menu for you.

@tonytoon Take a look to the NESPi case from retroflag

      http://retroflag.com/

It's a nice finish with fron USB available and it provides enough ROM for switches ... I think a 1.8" HDD will also fit with an ease

You can run RetroArch on a number of different things. I have it on a 3DS, but it's not "RetroPie" where it ties everything together neatly with an EmulationStation front end.

Reckon one of these is worth £3.50, and will it just be on all the time? Or is it just pointless junk?

@SonPluck The images won't be re-downloaded unless you delete them. There is an option to overwrite or append to the gamelist. Append will preserve the existing data including the last played and number of times played and only add in new games.

      @chipsnblip Thanks.

I suspect @thief122 would hopefully be able to provide more feedback as to whether this is something he'd use and how, given that the use case was brought up by him :)

In terms of the overall approach, I think that it's always positive to set up a GitHub project for anything you'd do that's on the creative/technical side. It's good for learning and sharing above all. It'll also help you get feedback - and even help - from other people who are interested in the same problem, as well as thinking about how to bring it to the wider audience. So yeah, I would recommend that, should you be interested in investing time in this. Not sure at what stage you are, and where do you see this heading - as well as whether this solution is something that people would in general use. Definitely getting feedback from the end users would help!

I suppose the key thing in all of these projects is that a) this is a problem that you are keen in exploring and solving, and b) that you're having fun along the process :)

My comment on the layout was just an option, as I was thinking about the problem. Indeed, right now it's just rendered on top of the game, which may (or may not) be ideal for those who will use it. That's kind of why I thought of using the wide screen real estate, but you may be right, it might not work on a smaller screen, or if the game is stretched! Well spotted.

I think there was a similar thread to this a while ago, though I can't find it. Might be interesting to see if this is indeed something more people would like to have and how, and maybe take it from there if you're keen to!

      Best of luck.

@Smashpwn As the Pi uses more processor when running an emulator etc, it'll up it's power usage. So when you get the crashes back to ES it makes sense this could be at fault.

Also, the official Pi3 power spec does state that 2.5a is the minimum required.

      I also use a 2v power supply.

Nothing will work. You need 5V. Do you mean 2A? If so, you need 2.5A for a Pi3. You have failed to provide the essential information listed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first so no further assistance is meaningful or possible.

@stinkwinkerton said in Sidebar only overlays?:

@Dochartaigh So, really, it would be cool if we could do an underlay instead of an overlay. Seems a lot simpler don't you think?

You have to remember that overlays are biggest for MAME games I think, and if you remember back to the arcades there were many, well, quite literal "overlays" (over top of the screen) with graphics that overlap parts of the screen themselves (like asteroids, a sword, shield, little monster creatures, etc.). Even old CRT TV's had that little part of trim that commonly went around the edge of the tube (which is why we sometimes see weird stuff on the edges of old console game ROMS - since the very edge of the screen was covered up by plastic moulding way back when).

This also lets them get creative with the "I'm actually looking through dirty plexiglass at the screen just like back in 1981" - which I personally don't get, but whatever.

I went through this a week or so ago. I got to the part about the pin also and left it a zeros. It gave me some error but if you go back to the setup menu and tell it to connect it should connect when you scan and hit the 2 buttons on the wii controller. Here is my thread on getting mine to work.
