      @windg

      I figured this out after wrangling with my Samsung firmware.

      It was trying to automatically adjust the signal.

      In my TV settings it had to be set to PCM. In ES default / hdmi / hdmi worked.

      It happened after a background firmware update I wasn’t informed of, hence my utter confusion over cause.

      The clue was that after switching to my Apple TV, same issue presented itself.

      I take back any suggestion it was a Retropie issue.

      The thing that really sent me for a loop was that for some reason the emulation station navigation clicks immediately became inaudible (but if you crank the volume you can hear it).

      This is still an issue, and I’m unsure if it’s TV/ Retropie or combination of issues. The games, playback of snaps, etc. still sound fine / normal volume.

      It is not significant enough to take much of my attention.

      @mitu

      I've already done that, a number of times.

      There's something more complicated going on here.

      I attempted a completely fresh install to track my progress better step-by-step.

      It's here: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/34489/continued-sound-issues-some-kind-of-bug

      There seems to be:

      A bug somewhere in the RetroPie audio script since 4.8 (whatever update coincided with the ".asoundrc is no longer being used" message).

      Why would raspi-config generate .asoundrc when we should be using /etc/alsa/conf.d/99-retropie.conf? Why multiple config files for the same thing?

      Something kind of bug or interaction with omx player.

      I think most of those who are posting with lvl0 volume mixer issues who aren't helped by your guide are stumbling because they have omx player enabled.

      That did the trick, uninstall IMP using the install script to do the uninstall.
      Check all the sound was working as expected and it was
      Reinstall of imp and I have audio goodness coming out of my Arcade Machine again :)

      Not sure which version of RetroPie are you using (version 4.4 is too old to support the PI4), but out of the box I think HDMI sound should work using the 4.7.1 image.

      Make sure that in the Audio settings in the RetroPie system you choose HDMI as output, then in ES the settings should be:
      AUDIO CARD: Default
      AUDIO DEVICE: HDMI

      For OMX audio output, just use ALSA and it should work.

      I successfully replaced the line

      dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d

      in my config.txt file with

      dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d

      and now everything works perfectly! Thanks for the help @mitu

      @mitu solution: create a script with the following:
      #! / bin / bash
      "apulse / opt / retropie / ports / lzdoom / lzdoom" ""

      It doesn't work like the other games on the list, but it opens the traditional lzdoom text dialog, the wads should be hosted in ./.config/lzdoom

      I've enabled Pulse again for within EmulationStation.
      It seems to fix my problem so far. I'll keep a close eye on this.

      I had the same problem. The navigation sound work but with delay, i press bottom and the sound play 2 seconds later. The video screen saver is not heard. The volume control although it changes it stays at zero. But the sound in the games is good.
      I have tried all the options of "Audio Card" "Audio Device", but the only one I hear something is heard with a lot of lag.
      This happened to me after I had updated the Emulation Station. Before updating it worked fine.

      Is there any way to fix it?

      Hey hey, maybe, I have found the solution: In the MAIN MENU / SOUND SETTINGS / AUDIO CARD, I selected <DEFAULT> because the entry was null <>. Just below, in the AUDIO DEVICE, I selected <PCM>.

      With this config, the error message disapeared. My config is: sound via a HDMI/VGA convertor, jack to mini-amplificator (RCA).

      Great, no ?

      Is there any documentation or user experience anywhere as to what the differences/pros/cons of each audio driver and resampler actually are?

      Once when I experienced problems with cd tracks on psx games, I experimented with different audio drivers. If you dig more and search the web, you will find some different opinions. I think one of the audio driver will synchronize with video and if you get frame drops or anything else can't keep it up, then audio starts to stutter. Changing the driver did resolve this problem, if i remember right. The audio wasn't no longer synchronized, but it sounded without problems and I couldn't tell anything wrong with it. It was only happening with cd tracks. So, in short, this could be one of the tradeoffs. I have no more details about this, sorry.

      Btw, you may find more information if you search about these topics in generell, like sdl vs alsa. These are common in Linux. And just in case you missed this page:
      https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Sound-Issues/ Note, they speak about older Raspberry Pi versions on this page.

      Yes that matters. Retropie cannot play Playstation 2 games. Only PS1.

      Hi again,
      Sorry about that, after entering amixer -i the output is amixer: Mixer default error: No such file or directory and entering amixer -l just gave the above error when I thought you said amixer -1,

      And would you have any idea about how I would even read the boot/config.txt file

      Thanks
