      Thanks :)

      It seems that tvservice -s outputs the info to egrep so I simply addedthe following lines to rc.local before exit 0

      if (/usr/bin/tvservice -s | /bin/egrep 'HDMI|DVI') ; then /home/pi/hdmi else /home/pi/rca fi

      Simple and neat!

      @iamtyce @DougA I finally managed to solve the problem with an HDMI splitter and an HDMI-to-VGA converter. 😄 The latter doesn't change the resolution, but my projector accepts the analog signal in contrast to the digital HDMI signal, which it refused as "unsupported". I just had to adjust the picture a bit via the projector's controls, as it was slightly off to the left and only partly visible.

      A mentionable obstacle was that only one out of three HDMI splitters I tried worked with the 1600x1200 pixels DMT signal from the Pi. The other two only accepted CEA signals (see HDMI mode options in the official Raspberry Pi documentation). Strangely enough, all three splitters look exactly the same from outside apart from the brand logo.

      This is the splitter that worked:

      https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00FECY0CI/

      And here's the converter:

      https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00KW6BXRG

      (Links go to Amazon Germany, but the non-Germans among you may at least learn the brand and model of the devices from them.)

      Ok I've tried a couple different things and I've run out of ideas. I know it's probably some stupid little thing I'm missing, but I have no clue why RetroPie is ignoring config.txt even with overscan_scale=1. Is it a glitch?

      @foxcek please read my last post. Can you take a picture of the tv screen when you hit the info button or change the channel to the video mode you are using? I want to see what mode its on. Plus a pic of the back of your tv's video hookups with and without the cables plugged in.

      I picked up one of these cables from a Goodwill for $0.50 but I couldn't get it to work on my older 32" 720p HDTV. I guess I should note that I have an RCA switch box that I was running through (so I can switch between my Blu-ray player, Wii, GameCube or PSX on that TV). There's probably something I needed to put in /boot/config.txt. I didn't really try very hard because it already works great with my HDMI cable.

      @capeman i ended up do it all the old way. But not sure if it mattered or not. It didnt do anything until i ssh'd in and ran the command for progressive which i should gave tried first. Now if we can get a way tomake it change back and forth automatically would be cool.

      I use something similar to this to hook my pi to an old wood grain tv with a single coaxial input, but there are hundreds of different brands.

      @katemonster Hey katemonster, I hope you see this. I'm doing something a lot like this. But I want to use the RGB instead. I found two diagrams that are pretty different from each other for how to get RGB from VGA to the input of the LCD. Do you have information on this?

      One diagram uses 270 resistance to intersect the combination of VGA pins 14 and 13 with the green, but only uses one VGA ground pin. The other diagram includes no resistance, uses 3 ground pins from vga. Neither worked, and I've been trying for a week. Its possible they didn't work because of my breadboard, or contact from a wire MAY have been bad when I tested. But I haven't been able to find information that anyone has verified to work. You definitely seem knowledgeable.

      @Jakob-Holz glad to see it is working for you. Unfortunately so many guides tell you to add lines to the bottom of the config but fail to mention it is already on the page somewhere else and may or may not be # hashtagged out.

      @obsidianspider
      I agree with @monstermadeofman
      The same monitors were used in PSPi v2 and of course in my latest project The Popeye Pi.

      I had to use a 12v input because my monitor lacks of support of 5v, the monitor used in the PSPi version runs with 5v. I think there is a power regulator in mine that should be removed and then 5v should also work.

      @kevinmac the CRT-PI shader included with retropie emulates shaders as well. beyond that i think the default NES emulator has core options that have different NES color palettes to reflect how different TVs affected the signal. lots of stuff to experiment with, in any case.
