Only the P1 controller has access to the Hotkey, so you can do any configurations for a game in the RGUI with a controller that has a hotkey defined (the one you chose when you configured the controller in EmulationStation). Make sure that controller has also an X button configured, otherwise you can't open the RGUI with the Hotkey + X combination.

To enable Multitap - and get more than 2 players working - you can do so from the Options menu, where you need to toggle on the Show other input settings, close the RGUI, then open it again and in the same Options menu, can set _Multitap_1 to ON and Pad 2 to Pad 4 to dualshock.
Since not all games support Multitap and enabling it globally would probably break input for it, make sure that you use the 'Create Game Options file' menu at the top of the Option list, then toggle off the Multitap option(s).

I'm having a similar issue with Sega CD / lr-genesis-plus-gx on the pi4. My files are .chd format. Worked in my previous build, verified the BIOS against the official documentation... nothing.

@lekzerum Any chance you could throw that file in a google drive link for me to try?

@dankcushions said in Best way to set up multitap?:

@lesk no, each system page in the wiki will have specific instructions to set up multitaps for a given system. eg https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Playstation-1#multitap-3-5-players

Sorry for late reply, but thanks! As I understand it, for the playstation you have to do some manual changes for each games that dosen't support analog etc.
But for Snes, Nes, Sega and Arcade I can just go in via the retroarch menu while playing a game and add multitap support and core save.

I think some things changed in the recent versions w.r.t. overrides saving. Some settings are blacklisted specifically - like the input_libretro_device settings (see here, changed about 10 months ago).

For the multi-tap settings, now the settings under Control are handled - as the link above said - by Control Remaps. Use the 'Save Game Remap File' and it should work.

@fdr4prez Thanks for the reply, I'm thinking about to buy a adapter from SNES original to USB yesterday I did some test putting my PS1 controller over the USB and enabling the multitap support and of course that this worked, I really believe that the way that I'm trying to do will not work unfortunately however thank you for the support guys!

Ok so I think I may have solved my issue which maybe a silly error on my behalf or something has still changed in later versions of retropie because I don't think I've ever had to change controller types.
But even though I've solved one problem it appears to have created an new problem.
Firstly I'll start with saying with default settings I usually have just turned on game specific options, started game, enabled multitap 1 in retroarch and all has worked. But it hasn't this time that's why I've had problems.
But what I have just done is changed player 1-4 controller type from default to standard and micro machines v3 has just worked with all 4 controllers.
I've then launched hogs of war and that has worked making sure controller type is analog.

So firstly i would like to know why player 1 and 2 controller would work with them all being on default but controllers 3 and 4 wouldn't.

      Now onto my new problem.
When setting multitap and controller type in options and saving game specific options, a yellow notification pops up saying core options saved.
And it appears to be saving it across all games as a core option rather the game specific option.
I have double checked and game specific options are set to true.

Thank you all for your help I'm almost there :)

@Breadbin As long as the system has 4 working controllers (regardless of how they're connected), it should work. The only possible configuration would be in the emulator options, to enable multi-tap if it's not the default.

@maskedsquirrels said in Multitap works for some games but not for others, Secret of Mana, Looney Tunes B-Ball:

Ok back to the original problem. The SOM version I have is Secret of Mana (USA) [En by FuSoYa v1.0] (Variable Width Font Edition).sfc according to the file name.

It still links player 2 and 3 together.

It is likely that this hack change something in the headers of the rom, resulting in snes9x not recognizing the rom and not applying the right settings to enable multitap. You should try with an official usa or pal rom to make sure.

@dankcushions Thanks for pointing at that topic, it seems that I didn't search for that topic properly.
I hope that it will get fixed .. even I noticed that the library is actually modified after the Mutlitap support .. it seems it is not a Frontend side has been modified, a ton of codes got change ..

I need to check every revision to check where exactly the multitap got broke.
