So in the end I did end up making the gamelist myself. The good thing is that the game and the thumbnail are the same file for Pico-8 games :)

      pi@retropie:~/RetroPie/roms $ cat /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pico8/gamelist.xml <?xml version="1.0"?> <gameList> <game> <path>./Across_the_river.p8.png</path> <name>Across_the_river</name> <image>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pico8/Across_the_river.p8.png</image> </game> <game> <path>./Combo_Pool.p8.png</path> <name>Combo_Pool</name> <image>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pico8/Combo_Pool.p8.png</image> </game> <game> <path>./Dank_Tomb.p8.png</path> <name>Dank_Tomb</name> <image>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pico8/Dank_Tomb.p8.png</image> </game> <game> <path>./Hungry_Harry_3d.p8.png</path> <name>Hungry_Harry_3d</name> <image>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pico8/Hungry_Harry_3d.p8.png</image> </game> <game> <path>./Kelins_delivery_Rain.p8.png</path> <name>Kelins_delivery_Rain</name> <image>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pico8/Kelins_delivery_Rain.p8.png</image> </game> <game> <path>./Stories_at_dawn.p8.png</path> <name>Stories_at_dawn</name> <image>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pico8/Stories_at_dawn.p8.png</image> </game> <game> <path>./The_Wee_Dungeon.p8.png</path> <name>The_Wee_Dungeon</name> <image>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pico8/The_Wee_Dungeon.p8.png</image> </game> <game> <path>./U-Turn.p8.png</path> <name>U-Turn</name> <image>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pico8/U-Turn.p8.png</image> </game> <game> <path>./Dusk_Child.p8.png</path> <name>Dusk_Child</name> <image>./Dusk_Child.p8.png</image> <playcount>2</playcount> <lastplayed>20190414T055919</lastplayed> </game> </gameList>

If there's a way via optional, I think that would be valuable. Either that or have a "preview all systems" toggle in the menu you can turn on or off, which would reveal or hide systems you aren't otherwise set up for. There are certainly systems I don't really know, and would find it interesting to check them out if it were fairly easy.

@dankcushions said in Struggling to get a decent FB Alpha v0.2.97.44 romset - use a Mame one?:

.44 is synced with current mame though a "non-merged" romset would have more roms

Careful with that statement, it's mostly true but there are exceptions, as an example i know a lot of pgm games won't work if you use a mame romset without converting it to a fbalpha one through clrmamepro (every few months i have people who report issues saying "pgm games don't work" thanks to that). FBAlpha also includes a lot of hacks from hbmame, some are fun.

      @chubsta Sorry, i don't provide "no-clone" dat files, and i don't recommend it either :

a few parents aren't working and are there only to get their clones working idk about 1943 specifically, but some games are different from a clone to another, i think that's especially true for a few shmup where you get different foes/pattern, i noticed that while working on a bug with raiden2 last year.

@mitu said in Regional dependencies on ROMs across different emulators:

The emulator should be able to scale it to your native TV screen's resolution.
EDIT: What I've other people recommend - and it sort of makes sense - is to try and run the NTSC version of a ROM when possible. NTSC ran at almost 60hz, similar to the modern displays.

Bingo - that's exactly what I just did before I'm reading this :-)
Set boot config to CEA-4, removed default emulator video choice from on-game startup menu and sorted out my ROMs so now it's all USA (NTSC) versions.
      Now it's all perfect.
As always: Thanks buddy for your good explanation and clarification.

@OregonPacifist there isn't anything magical about it. You can put those roms back into the arcade folder and they will work. You just need to change the default emulator in the runcommand menu. Definitely should read the documents links previously posted.

@mitu i read it but was unsure as i really dont want to scrape each emulator seperately as per ( Skyscraper -p snes -s screenscraper) suggests. also i was wondering if that same thing could be done from the graphical interface. If not what command syntax would i use to scrape all roms/emulators?

Originally i think i used the built in scraper from emulationstation and it scraped almost all of them but this time it did barely any.

I tried scraping for the ROMs you mentioned and I had no problems. For reference, here are the ROM names and their MD5 checksum:

      Super Mario Bros. (World).zip (md5 - 2961ae52ee8dee9a9fbc7680ced1f741) Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA).zip (md5 - 200edb85a698ccf5e11a0dcee0e0e771) Super Mario Bros. 3 (USA).zip (md5 - 1961b6290a81c4665109951bbeb9bd55)

There is a thread with a collection of sources for legal roms. It shows up as the fourth hit if you search the forum for "legal roms".

One could use /etc/fstab to mount a network drive replacing the use of autostart.sh~

@BobHarris Some PCBs could support multiple romsets, and let's not forget NeoGeo. Like I mentioned before, the cabinet (besides the copyrighted artwork) was not a consideration at all for legality, only the PCB/ROMs. They are most likely MAME based hacks, but it IS possible.

@RedbeardTheVast You can try using the procedure to run the ROMs from USB (the Manual mount method) and replace the USB device with SD device, the setup should be the same and it's just the mount device that's different. The USB device should be something like /dev/sda1, the SD device probably something like /dev/mmcblk0p1.

Adding to @rbaker's reply, once you have your game created, you would add it to RetroPie as a Port.

@cousinsfan said in Issues Making AdvanceMame Rom set...:

You said "it's corresponding" rollback set...not any old older one?

I've always only used a ROM set's corresponding rollback set when building. What's more, I always use the absolute most recent available at any time when doing so. I can't speak to the results of any other method, but I've never had an issue using that work flow.

      Uhm..."simply obtain .106".....I have a question. :)
