Correct when piping through the HDMI all is well with sound levels. The only reason I wanted to use the AV jack is so I could play Pandora with the TV off.

I cannot even install Firefox. ???

I got the image from from https://www.raspberrypi.org/software/operating-systems/

@solidshook not an expert, my understanding is that tvservice is used heavily in CRT guides/scripts, and this is only partially functional on pi4, since it is a call to the fkms firmware layer that is being depreciated.

raspberry pi are instead moving to the open source driver stack, which aims to be a more standard KMS offering, where the way to use custom modes is via DRM modesetting or xandr, the latter of which relies on X which retropie doesn't use by default, and i believe the former might not have enough flexibility.

still, an approach should be possible, with some work.

@billymild by default retropie uses the RGUI menu driver:
    alt text

it sounds like you're talking about the XMB menu driver:
    alt text

you could set it to the latter via https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Configuration-Editor/ -

advanced config configure libretro options all/retroarch.cfg menu_driver = xmb

note that RGUI is the menu that is referenced in all our docs, and may be more performant on low spec machines like Pis.

Anyone have any experience with this board? It's interesting to see a VGA hat that supports 24 bit colour, was hoping to find someone that has done some kind of comparison between this and other solutions (VGA666, HDMI->VGA converters, RT Ultimate, etc).

It is very noticeable on certain games. Try WWF No Mercy on n64, it's night and day the PAL Vs NTSC versions.

I did see that set. It's on my list of things to get.
I see in my future getting a merged set of ROMs to save download time and creating my own non-merged set afterwards.

Do you think my 9 year old PC might be powerful enough to run most games on the latest MAME? I know it is leaps and bounds ahead of the Pi, but I don't know how PC processing power compares to arcade hardware.

EDIT: Forgot the age of my PC

@mortalwombat said in Any SegaCD/Turbografx-16 fans here? Recommendations welcome:

Never really played the PSP and am a bit skeptical to do so if the Pi already has trouble/can't play the PS2

A pi 4 handles many psp games surprisingly well. Even more performance can be gained by overclocking and setting the display resolution to 720p instead of 1080p via the runcommand menu. Some games will require a little frameskipping and others will be fine without it.

@crush Yeah, I think Vilros was going for the original 6 button layout rather than the extra features Retro-bit did. The Retro-bit controllers are admittedly a nicer option as far as Genesis goes.

I think I'd prefer my 8bitDo SN30 pro for SNES and Playstation. But I plan to get this set for the NES and N64 options, and the rest can be used as controllers by friends/family. I've yet to decide what I want to do for Sega, but I may just get this one and get the Retro-bit when I have the luxury of extra game budget.

They both have their merits. The DS version has had its randomness balanced, but I've also heard it described as being too balanced. A good example is the Farsight Bracer, which is an item that when worn will always let you see the entire map immediately, as well as the activity and placement of all the enemies. If you know how to fully make use of it, this is enough of an advantage to single-handedly win you the first quest all by itself. In the DS version, it only appears in the last half of any dungeon, whereas it can appear at any point in the SNES version. I had one play-through where the game spawned me two spaces away from the bracer in the very first room. The odds on that happening are astronomical, but those kind of truly random possibilities are what I personally prefer. One thing to keep in mind is that my item manager only works with the SNES version. However, there are plenty of checklists online for the DS version if you choose to go that route.

A pretty big difference in the DS version that can be seen as a positive is that the final 99 level dungeon reworks the last fifth its rooms. In the SNES version, level 79 contains as powerful an array of enemies as will exist until the end. The DS version creates a few more power evolutions that can make the last leg a bit more interesting. No matter which version you choose, I'll give you two good tips to get going. First, If you visit the Tavern in the town before each outing, the bartender will always give you a rice ball to stave off starvation. Second, you can visit Fei the researcher before each outing and test one of his tutorial rooms. Not only does each one teach a VERY valuable lesson about the game's possibilities, but afterward he'll also always give you an item to take with you on your main journey. I know that in the SNES version, the item he gives is drawn from the entire pool of items that are available in the first quest, so this can be a huge advantage.
