You won't see the emulators until the roms are in their respective folders.
Once Retropie sees roms in the the folder, it adds the appropriate emulator to the menu.

I wonder if it would work to install a Linux distro in DosBox then install Wine in that. Though as I'm typing I realize that would be introducing a lot of extra overhead and would likely crawl.

Searching online this afternoon shows that a lot of people seem to have trouble with the low price Mayflash adapter. Raphnet Technologies BRD-4NES4SNES seems to not only work better, but the site expressly discusses use with RetroPie and even has addressed some of the issues people have encountered when using with RetroPie. I just ordered one and it should be here in a week or two.

What do you think of this idea to get dolphin running on atom quad core 1.96 GHz ?

For better or worse, you'd see performance in this range...

For me Dosbox is way easier, hardly any probem getting games up and running.

It's an amazing emulator for sure. One of the most impressive out there. You also raise a good point about the particular time frame in question as far as port quality is concerned.

Why is it not possible to get an emulator where you just have to throw a amiga-file at?

I've been using the same kickstart rom for years now and after it's set, I don't have any issues loading games myself. Loading the game's disk image and pressing reset is all that is needed most times. I do seem to remember that finding a kickstart rom that would perform well was a bit of a search though.

@dankcushions Its not the non working roms as such but more being able to whittle the total number in the lite down further. I am also looking at Don's Hyperspin Tools (or some other app that you can filter genres by) to possibly filter and reduce.

re: binaries. libretro actually have their own nightly binaries for common architectures (including Linux x86 - see http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/linux/)

so it's possible the script could utilise these for x86, if anyone wants to code it...

i find downloading all these roms one at a time can be super tedious so if anyone has a download that has 20 in one or something that would be great thanks!

You can always use your phone too. Samsung makes docking stations for their phones. I've used mine quite a bit while traveling. It provides HDMI output and a USB hub so you can plug in controllers.

@Concat i tried adding the keyboard which is something you can do but no response. Prboom appears to lock out the keyboard as a keyboard. (Still works as player 1 simultaneously with the controller)

I have a 8Bitdo Zero, and can share some info with you...

I wonder if it would work well with android cellphones? Might make a nice pocket system.

Yes. It works with android. I use it with RetroArch and I'm very happy!

I don't know if I would want to use it as my main controller for extended play though.

It's not cool for fighting games. It's the only exception.
I can play Battletoads (NES) nicely with it, but it's hard to make a Shoryuken(Street Fighter), for example.

I'm sure I have seen a Bluetooth snes controller replica though.

If you are talking about the 8bitdo SNES30, then yes! It's very worthwile. I have a NES30 too, really really cool to play with those controllers. The 8bitdo company has some nice products there.

Conclusion: 8Bitdo Zero is cool, the only exception is for games where you need to do crazy stuff with the d-pad (eg: The King of Fighters special moves). I use it to play NES classics and I'm happy. It's cool to always carry in your pocket and play with your Android/RetroArch whenever you have opportunity.
BUT if you want to play at home, and have enough money, the SNES30 would be a better choice. It works fine with Android too, but it isn't as portable as the Zero.

I won't. Well I won't until I find it in a bargain bin or a garage sale 10 years down the road. Nintendo's lack of foresight to include expandable internal memory and with no plans of increasing the game count past 30 really cuts the longevity and potential value until this becomes an obscure collectable.

The trick is to find it before it becomes to rare and obscure. ;)

I got my virtual boy for $5 that way.
