Just wanted to say Thanks for this question and answer. I had been struggling to get my 8bitdo Ultimate Wireless controller working in the games also and it turned out to be the same issue.
    Adding /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/8BitDo_Ultimate_wireless_Controller.cfg from https://github.com/libretro/retroarch-joypad-autoconfig/blob/master/udev/8BitDo_SN30_Pro%2B_BT_B.cfg worked.

As a total RetroPie/EmulationStation/RetroArch newbie, how is anyone supposed to know that they needed to manually add these controller configs? Is it supposed to be an automated system that's just not working correctly because I never saw any documentation anywhere that pointed users to the libretro GitHub.

I fixed the issue, I just had to turn off “sort custom collections and systems” in the game collection settings.

You can enable, in Emulationstation menu, the Parse Metadata Only. With this ES will not scan for new roms on start-up.

    I installed weekly build retropie-bullseye-4.8.5-rpi3_zero2w (24-Mar-2024 05:10) and added it to config.txt:

    dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d dtoverlay=vc4-kms-DPI-35inch dtoverlay=waveshare-35dpi-3b-4b dtoverlay=waveshare-35dpi-3b dtoverlay=waveshare-35dpi-4b dtoverlay=waveshare-35dpi dtoverlay=waveshare-touch-35dpi

And I got a normal FPS!

    Maybe this helps someone.
I had a similar issues on Rearmed core on RetroArch on the switch.
The game would sometimes get stuck in a state if you pressed pause or inventory the game would freeze.
It happened to me in certain sections of the game

on a water level with crumble blocks above spikes after a slide (I somehow wondered back and did more things and I fixed it). on the last room of the barkhang monestary after putting in the prayer wheels. It forces you to put in an item and open up the inventory and freezes

I did manage to save the game before this in the pause menu book (you have to do it before getting into that state where pause crashes the game). Copy the save file .srm, play it on PC (same emulator but x86) finish the level, save and reload onto switch (or your retropie).

Sadly if you rebind quicksave and quickload not to pause the game as a workaround it will eventually force you to open the inventory and freeze the game.

Not ideal but possible not to loose all progress and potentially keep playing on

Some shaders are effecting drastically performance. What shader are you using?

If you enable FPS counter, you will see the frames, so to be sure that you have frames drop and not screen tearing. You can enable this during the game from here :
Open Retroarch menu during game > Settings > On-Screen Display > On-Screen Notifications > Notification Visibility> Display Framerate

In the core options, turn off dynamic recompiler and set clock speed to 57.

UPDATE/SOLVED: it was not related to the music player, after all.

I had presumed that libmpg123 error meant it was related to my mpg123 background music player, but it seems that's may be not the case.

It only happen on "random video" screensaver mode, I am unable to reproduce on either "dim" or "slideshow" screensaver modes.

...and, it happens now even with the music disabled. Now mpg123 is still installed on my RPi4 but when disabled it is never brought up during autostart.sh so now is just ES(-dev), and my video files (mostly which come from ScreenScraper).

Looks libmpg123 is also used by the vlc (which I do use on ES, as I have "use OMX player for screensaver" set to "off.")

    https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues/1554

Seems it is caused by (one or more) particular video files. I (backed up and) deleted half my gamelists (so their videos won't be played), and the error still occurred. Then I restored my backups, and deleted the other half the gamelists -- this time no error! I have narrowed it down further to a single game in my SNES playlist -- confirmed by removing all other entries so only that one plays when triggering screensaver, and then the error happens right away.

I tracked it down to a single bad video from screenscraper. Whenever the Pop'n TwinBee (SNES) video is played, the Illegal Audio-MPEG-Header error is displayed in console, in multiple, when exit EmulationStation.

This is accompanied by a visual glitch in the video playback (or freeze, depending on player) at about 0:16 seconds in, just past the halfway-mark. This also was visible on the video served from the screenscraper website.

I tagged the video in a comment on screenscraper.fr asking to re- generate their standardized video. A short time later, that request was granted and, after re-scraping that one game, the error is now resolved!

For curiosity: if you have this game, and have a video scraped prior to a few hours ago (about 2024-03-22 19:00 GMT), do you experience the same console error after playing its video on screensaver and, after re-scraping, is it also now resolved?

This is occured infrequently and is likely some little bug. I've had it happen only 3 times and 2 were the first two times i was in the desktop and explorer. Only happened once in the last 40 or so times since. lol.
