@hyperstarr YOu need to add games to the roms folders. For example, if you put a game in the NES folder (roms/nes) then the NES will show up as a system in the carousel. The carousel auto-hides systems that have no games.

    Brilliant, thank you very much!

@dashbandith Hi there! I'm the author of the scriptmodule to install the Godot "emulator". As @mitu already mentioned, your distro is not officially supported and my script is intended to work with RetroPie. Besides that, the message you are getting is because your platform is not recognised by the script and thus can't offer any configuration options, but the "emulators" should work anyway. If you end up using RetroPie I'll be more than happy to try to help you ;)

I've been testing a few things and found that two things help.

A full update seemed to fix the usbmount service failing to start. (Could be coincidental. I will advise if it turns out to be bad advice) sudo apt update sudo apt full-upgrade sudo reboot

UPDATE : Confirmed AOK. Occasionally I see the logs fly by with a red usbmount service failure, but within 2 seconds there is a matching line stating the usbmount service is up and running. All good.

It seems that the root cause of the extensive time delay to launch ES is ES searching the roms folders to see if there have been any new roms added. https://github.com/jrassa/EmulationStation/blob/master/GAMELISTS.md indicates that once I am happy with my roms I can change how ES is launched by using the switch --gamelist-only to skip automatic searching, and only display games defined in the system's gamelist.xml. Will update shortly after I've done some testing.

UPDATE: --gamelist-only switch works perfectly. Can also be set by entering RetroPie's Main menu > Other > and enabling Parse Gamelists Only. I can now have thousands of roms on the attached USB drive and ES loads in a few seconds. :-)

    @mike1889

I actually have a dedicated hotkey on the arcade controller. On the SNES pads I just use SELECT as hotkey. I haven’t had the time use the cabinet for some time now but at least I can’t remember having problems when swapping between the different configurations of buttons on the controllers..

In some cases using SELECT as a hotkey can interfere with the game controls but as far as I’m concerned the dedicated hotkey is not absolutely necessary. On the other hand I really wish I had put in two more action buttons on the arcade controllers. I now have Street Fighter style six button layouts but I wish they were eight buttons instead. They could be used as R1 and R2 on Playstation games. NeoGeo cabinets used to have four buttons in a row so having two rows of four buttons would mimic the NeoGeo controller better as I then could use one out of the two rows of buttons as originally intended. There’s probably also many other situations where more action buttons will allow for better configurations.

If you haven’t read this yet you really should, it’s a fantastic resource on arcade controllers:

The mappings for N64 are described in the emulators doc page - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Nintendo-64/. If you wish to change it, you can either use RetroArch's input remapping for the lr-mupen64/lr-mupen64-next emulators or editing the InputAutoCfg.ini for the standalone mupen64plus emulator.

@technicaljunky It's not a problem if PulseAudio is present - the only issue for you seems to be EmulationStation's audio settings, which should be solvable with the correct configuration.

@superfella said in So this clearly isn't good:

I still seem to have access to the files on the card, so what do I need to back up before I install a new image?

If it's only the boot partition, that won't help.

(People always say "back up your data" as if that's any sort of help. What does it actually MEAN? Will the contents of the home>pi>RetroPie>roms and opt>retropie>configs folders be enough to basically get me back to where I was?)

The underlying Linux operating system that RetroPie runs on top of is intrinsically multiuser.
You only need a free TeleTYpe program (I recomment putty for Windows) to gain access from your laptop in the same way as WinSCP does to move files.

    Username pi - Password raspberry
The pi user does NOT have administrator rights, but the 'run as super user' keyword "sudo" can be used in front of any commands that needs them (no admin password required).

Make the terminal window as big as you need and use the nano editor to change configurations.

    bye.

Ok, after some more digging around in the menu, it’s just a simple error in the documentation.

The correct path is: Quick Menu > Options > Pad # Type

@dsquared .cdi "should" generally work but also cause more issues than they are worth.
