've seen this error message, but I don't understand what it means because the emulator doesn't seem to be in software mode. It might be related to RetroArch. If you have enabled the Vulkan driver in your setup, you can get rid of this error by using the Vulkan driver in RetroArch for this core

[ERROR] Requesting OpenGL context, but RetroArch is compiled against OpenGLES. Cannot use HW context. [ERROR] [Environ]: SET_HW_RENDER - Dynamic request HW context failed. [ERROR] [Environ]: SET_MESSAGE_EXT: Unable to find or open hardware renderer for frontend preferred hardware context. Falling back to software renderer.

    @mitu

Apparently i have reinstall all package manually from section "core" (retroarch, emulationstation, retropiemenu, runcommand and latest joy2key).
Apparently retroarch and emulationstation it's recompiled from source........

When all procedure it's completed all games back to works........

If i found some core present a similar issue......... if not update it's ready i go to reinstall/recompile manually from source and see if back to works.

I have just found the issue whit Retropie_setup script and joy2key apparently not works if i launch it from emulationstation..... but i have already reply on other thread about this specific issue.

@cheesymonkey please don't bump ancient topics.

For your controller model, you should install the xpadneo driver and then (re-)map the controller in EmulationStation, you don't need xboxdrv unless nowadays unless you're trying to set-up some special mapping (i.e. emulate 4way joysticks, keys pressed on button combo, modify the deadzone, etc.)

If you still have issues after installing xpadneo with the gamepad, please open a separate topic.

Please add some info about your setup, as requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

    Is the sound/audio working in-game ?

@noBios said in Change emulator settings for emulator that doesn't start anymore:

I think the sub menu was called "core settings" but this string is nowhere to be found in the docs. So back to square one.

Maybe you're referring to core options. Please provide the info asked - even if consider the information is not required, you'd be surprised of how much diagnostic knowledge is packed in the info asked.

Get a ROM to test the gamepad - like https://www.psx-place.com/resources/padtest.396/ for PS1 - and run it under RetroArch to test your inputs.

EDIT: outside am emulator, you can use the jstest utility to test the connection/input response with your controller. You'll have to exit EmulationStation and run it from the command line like so:

    jstest /dev/input/js0

To finish the test and get back to EmulationStation, use Ctrl+C (this will close the jstest session) and type emulationstation (+ enter) to start EmulationStation again.

This is a RetroPie support forum, not a general emulation forum - why are you posting here instead of trying the Vice's support forum ?

@sugarfree I tired this yesterday ish but I had to mess with everything before I added retropi on top of pi desktop. Works 90% ish you also have to take a file that is named the exact same thing and use the mv of cp command to move it into the right spot it seems

    sudo mv splash.png /usr/share/plymouth/pix/splash.png

I was under the impression that tweakvc would work for RaspiOS Buster based systems, despite the comment on the project page.

Other option would be to add a correct sdtv_mode to config.txt - see here - but that would enable it permanently and wouldn't be a toggle as it is with tweakvc.

EDIT: it seems that the official firmware doesn't have PAL60 support, only some experimental versions which were beta tested as part of the Github topic mentioned above.

@mitu hey! sorry, school started so I've been busy. here's the requested info:
    Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.5
    RetroPie 4.8.8
Installed from the SD image on the website
All that's connected rn is the one dragonrise controller
I get a not configured error message from retroarch

About the config files, I was the one who mistakenly deleted them after trying to fix different control issues (it was a long night and at that point every button except select was unresponsive). I might try going from retropie-setup and seeing if that works?

there's a chance I disabled autoconfiguration, but I have no clue how I did that or how I would turn it back on. I definitely did not mess w es_input.cfg though, I never touched the es folder anyways.

I'll get back to you if the reset via retropie_setup helps, I didn't know that was a thing at all. thank you for your help :)

Does the transfer speed of the SD card effect the performance while playing? If it does which SD card do you recommend for the best value disregard space.

No, it does not, but it certainly helps in day-to-day operations (boot process, updates, copying files, etc.).

@willelind said in GPIOnext input works great during menu but stops working after game boots:

What did you mean by that? It seems that my input keybindings are from the /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg file, listed under keyboard, not joypad/gamepad.

Look in a verbose log and see if an additional joystick/gamepad input type is detected. It may be that GPIONext adds an additional gamepad device, even if you configure it as a keyboard.

Is there no interest in having retropie run as a service on top of a full desktop environment?

    Not on the Raspberry Pi.
RetroPie (ES + emulators) works fine on a PC platform from the desktop, but the audio configuration is handled by the system/desktop environment and there's not much that RetroPie configures at this point, it just used the default audio device that's register in the system (i.e. in PipeWire/PulseAudio).

EDIT: as explained before, you need to find the right Audio Card setting which works for you. Try using PCM/Master instead of HDMI, it should work.

@mathan416 Does this happen when the screensaver is started or later when the system is reaching "sleep" state (see Screensaver Options -> System sleep time: If it is 0 then there is no "sleep" timeout but only the screensaver timeout).
