@benjiman You can use the File Manager - in the RetroPie system menu - to look in the file directly on the Pi, but it's easier if you have a PC and connect via file shares at \\retropie\configs\all\emulators.cfg.

You can map this in mame menu. Within the game it can be accessed via keyboard by pressing TAB key. You can map player 2 joystick to player 1 inputs.

Even better: with the new and very cool mame2003-plus-libretro emulator there is a core option implemented for this. Once set, it enables this control scheme for all dual joystick games. See this github issue 278 and github issue 216

I ended up just going back to the 3.5mm jack for audio in my cabinet. Based on the linked article, I just made sure I had the following settings in my config.txt:

disable_audio_dither=1
audio_pwm_mode=2

For some reason my pwm_mode was set to 0 in my config and changing that to 2 resolved all my issues with the 3.5mm jack.

Unfortunately, I was never able to get the crackle / hiss / static noise issue resolved when sending audio out HDMI to my HDMI to VGA adapter.

Well, first you have a lot of addons installed that might be related to "piracy", I don't care about it, but that might cause problems, especially because many of them are done by people with little experience in coding and/or with malicious intents, be carefull about what you add to Kodi.
Second, you have a lot of errors (besides the ones from the addons I mentioned above) that Kodi cannot read or says that the file is read only:

1:43:30.972 T:1631396784 ERROR: SQL: [Textures13.db] Attempt to write a readonly database

This generally indicates that your system suffered file corruption, or most likely, your microSD card is broken or faulty.
This isn't easy to fix, and is impossible if your card is broken.
Try to move or delete your Kodi settings (/home/pi/.kodi) to start fresh with default settings.

Sounds like you've hit the tab key. Your right shoulder on your ps3 controller will be assigned to the tab key of the keyboard. If you hit tab key on your keyboard you will get the same menu. This is the standard menu in mame and allows you to change settings for mame or game specific settings such as difficulty like you have seen.

I wouldn't mind adding support for it, but it seems it was some kind of private rom.

@fitz43 Choose the overwrite option for the Gamelists in the configuration screen and it will re-scrape the already scraped ROMs.

@lostless i couldn’t swap them in the RetroArch menu because the confirm and cancel buttons on the controller wouldn’t work in RetroArch for some reason. So here is what I did and it worked perfectly. I downloaded retropie version 4.2 and re flashed the mini sd card. Now it works just fine. But thank you for your suggestions. Love this community.

@caelthunderwing @Ecks Man, I really didn't want to have to flatten and reinstall because I'd already put a LOT of roms on this thing, but the Kintaro image appears to have been the problem, yup. Using the base one from the website solved the problem. Time to start moving the roms over again!

At this point I just have input lag to deal with, but that's a separate issue I'm going to have to look into and make a separate thread for if necessary. Thanks for your help!

@mitu Not sure I'd call that "documented" as it's not noted as an important mount option, but indeed it is there with a "...mine looks like..."; pretty easy to miss when you're already very familiar with mounting network shares in ubuntu/debian via fstab. I've never used either noserverino nor nounix and never had that cause any issues at all... but then again, all my other hardware is 64 bit.

Interesting that he recommends using a symlink - I wasn't able to get the ScummVM GUI to follow symlinks at all, it just showed them as grey. That was my first stumbling block, as I've used that method with every other emulator (symlinks pointing to the mount point).

I wonder if my symlinks weren't working there because of the lack noserverino and/or nounix issue? I'll check up on that. I'd prefer to keep things consistent for ease of maintainability, so I'd rather go back to a symlink there too.

i discovered (trying) that autoconfiguration doesn't work for single emulators, like psx. so i read some internet guides.
i configured it manually, editing the file /opt/retropie/configs/psx/retroarch.cfg
adding this:

@urko948 The roms / zip files shouldn't be renamed. Mame expects them with specific names, because in the emulator is a database of filenames and other informations. Thats why you need a specific romset for a specific Mame version btw. If you rename anything, then you should do this within the gamelist.xml or elsewhere related. So, you should bring back the original state of roms with original names. Then remove the non working gamelist.xml by moving the file to different place for later analysis.

And then? I don't know. :D Maybe upload the faulty gamelist.xml, so we can check it and maybe see something unusual going on.
