Are you using RetroPie 4?
It looks like you have updated some keys for the keyboard in your /all/retroarch.cfg file.
The defaults should be:

You can copy that to your file to test.

But it may well be the controller file that is having issues, can you post that on pastebin?
It should be in /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/

What exactly are the problems with the current kernel there? Could you maybe point me to the relevant discussion?

I do confirm issue with the deletion of the kick roms is now gone (either via binary or source options). Yet I still having issue with the controls. I'll keep checking in the coming days to see if upstream got fixes. Though the binary option from RP doesn't help and I'm really puzzled by that.

The retroarch on "udev" reconfigure the controller i guess to wrong mapping?

It was a fresh install yes. I did have the xbox driver installed for a while but then ended up uninstalling that reverting back to xpad. I dont know if that helps. As far as editing config files directly the only thing i did was in relation to that xbox driver to flip A and B for nes games. That has been reverted with no ill affects i can tell and like i said the xbox driver uninstalled and reverted back to xpad.

About the consoleblank=0, I just add that on the next line below in cmdline.txt, right?
I tried adding the setterm --blank 0 in autostart.sh and it still did it, though this time I just stayed at the menu instead of updating all installed packages like it did before, after 5 minutes the screen blanks out and the controller no longer responds and I have to use the keyboard.

Awesome, thanks! I'll give that a try next time. I just reinstalled everything since that seemed to help last time. I'm going to try quitting and shutting down retropie correctly and hopefully I just won't have that problem anymore.

Delete the gameboy retroarch.cfg file, update to the last Retropie script, and reinstall the emulator.

Could be that annoying bug that many people faced with the new version. Really what @Floob said; check the following file:

/opt/retropie/configs/psx/retroarch.cfg

If it has a lot of code you need to delete the file, update the RetroPie Install script, re-install the emulator(s). I had a similar problem with the Genesis emulators and this solved it, I hope it works for you like it did for me.

Yeah, I saw the select 1-4 controller tool. I think I need to see that in action in a video before deciding to do it.

Doing it the way @lostless described works great except the hotkeys leave the Xin-Mo and go to the priority controller when plugged in. It's a minor inconvenience.

I want to leave this as streamline as possible since this will be in my office and lots of people who do not know how to use the Pi can still play it and navigate it in an intuitive way.
