@Darksavior mine drops to the console if that's where I start it or if from ES, drops me back there.

I'll try mitus suggestion first and see how that goes. It would be nice to be able to use this as I move my computer to the living room currently each time for the wife and I to game.

I finally brought my Pi4 home today so I might just give this a shot as well and see what happens with both retropie and SL later on.

@mikeahays could be your power supply. I had this happen with a junk power supply. Maybe it's a different problem in your case.

    @BuZz ok thanks.
I was actually able to get it by updating from binary. It showed I had it and that it was installed, but I had to reinstall/update and it’s now working.
    Thanks

But... if you're trying to just prevent the message from appearing when you don't have a controller available, the easiest solution is to configure a keyboard as input in EmulationStation. When started, even if there's no controller connected, EmulationStation will skip the welcome message and go right into the system list.

yes, I just started trying out a few N64 games and noticed the lag. But I'm also not using an official raspberry pi power cord, the power cord that came with my pi was a micro USB to regular USB that plugged into a Power Adapter. But the plug doesn't fit snug into the adapter. So I directly plug my cord into a surge protector with a built in USB port. I'm getting a better power cord in the mail today to try out. Power consumption definitely effected my lag in Dreamcast, N64, and PSP games. But PSX always plays falwlessly. That doesn't make sense. Lol.

And yes I had that Tronkyfan theme before. Tried out alot of them. Superdisplay is one of the best ones for any newbie I believe. It allows you to see individual themed collections artwork and you can view 7 systems at once which is superior to most of the themes I've seen. The Star Wars theme though let's you see 9 systems at once and has run fairly well for me recently and with the new movie out now I just have to keep it.

@johden Please don't add additional characters to the title to try and get attention - no need for \\title//

    I have changed it

Try adding the / before the relative path, so it becomes

Leave SHADERs and use OVERLAYs which simulates scanlines.

1 - install overlays from the retropie menu
2 - go to the folder:
    /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/overlays/effects/scanlines/
take an overlay file and copy it to your computer, as well as your configuration file
3 - The overlay file is a png that can be cut into photoshop or other simpler programs. cut to fill exactly 640x480 in length.
4 - so remember in the configuration file and png file names etc where you have some resolution (example 1280x1024) you replace with 640x480

note that you are creating your 640x480 overlay from scratch

5 - enable overlays and select the one you created that has 640x480.

this is the method i found to make scanlines correctly match the pixels displayed on the screen

OBS: My english is bad, i am using google translator, i hope nothing written has got double meaning here too. Because in my post about EMULATIONSTATION LOCATION one person even complained.

@uraverageplayer What emulator/game are you starting when it's not working ?
Configuring the joysticks in EmulationStation would automatically create a configuration for RetroArch based emulators (the ones that start with lr-), but certain emulators are not auto-configured (i.e. advmame or mame4all).
