@obsidianspider Good to know. That's the conclusion I came to. I made my backup this morning and installed a driver for a highly rated (and free) app called Unified Remote. Need to experiment with it when I have time, but it did connect briefly. Seemed to be a wifi connection issue of some kind. Will post my results here if I can get it working properly.

I just want to be able to pick up the phone and type "esc" when and if necessary, that sort of thing. Unified Remote app provides a full keyboard with command keys, arrows, etc on the phone.

User here was able to get it configured fine in ES - they had to tweak their retroarch joypad configuration though for it to work with games - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/2097/controller-does-not-work-in-games

Made some progress by changing the retroarch config to use sdl2 instead of udev. However It feels a little bit flaky. Now I need to try and get the second controller connected.

Try my approach combined with Luetzels' here:
      https://luetzels.raspiblog.com/?p=1870

Install the patched Bluez from the blog (overwriting default raspbian bluez – do not uninstall it first, just overwrite). Then Shanwan sixad. Reboot, then its working like a boss..

      Try this first.

      I'm also having some issues...
Like in the game i can't acces the retroarch config anymore.

      Is the wiki updated?

The directory that is missing is as follows:
      /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/udev

      Thanks!

      Unity,
I was in a similar situation as you, but got the DS4 successfully paired today! My last install was only 1 week old, so not sure where it went wrong, but today I performed a fresh install and got it going!

My steps for successful DS4 pairing:

      • Flash retropie 4.0.2.
      • Sudo apt-get update
      • sudo apt-get upgrade
      • retropie setup script, update all installed packages (repetitive?)
      • From GUI, Bluetooth pair DS4(#2) using wired DS4(#1). (No freezing while "searching" this time!)
      • Configure input GUI, hold down a button on the bluetooth'd DS4(#2) and configure inputs
      • Shutdown system
      • Unplug wired DS4
      • Power up
      • Turn on DS4(#2), sync'd right up as player 1, hotkeys and all input working

It must have been a config file issue that was preventing the sync before, because I had performed all of the upgrades on my prior SD card, but this time around it worked wondefully! I have not attempted to sync 2 DS4s at the same time, yet.

P.S. I did zero of the 'extra setup' shown on the github for DS4 controllers. The native packages work for me now. I hope this helps you!

      Good luck!

@Ziffel since no one else has chimed in I'll give my two cents

I use several wireless Xbox 360 controllers with a Generic Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver that plugs in USB and I was very surprised that I didn't have any noticeable input lag. I also have an ASUS Nexus Player Gamepad that connects using Bluetooth and it seams pretty responsive as well (but I only tried it once and I use it on my laptop more). I bet there's probably a few emulators that are slower than others at input but for the most part I feel like my Raspberry Pi 3 handles all this pretty well.

What kind of controller are you using?

Now you did mention TV lag which is a real thing. I had already optimized my TV a long time ago but you might try some of these and see if it helps with your input lag:

First, if your TV has Game Mode then turn that on! Second, disable any power saving settings or ambient screen dimming. Third, turn off all post-processing effects on your TV like dynamic contrast, etc. Forth, make sure you're not daisy chaining the HDMI through an Xbox or another device (sometimes even amplifiers can delay signals). Fifth, also test with each HDMI port in the back of the TV. Sometimes 1 or 2 HDMI ports are faster than the rest. Last, maybe try other TVs and monitors to see if you still have input lag

Also make sure you have the newest version of RetroPie (I think there is some fixes to the emulator input latency):

@BuZz Thanks for the help. I will Test some new psu and a fresh Image.
Hopefully it works. Will get in touch with News.
It would be annoying, if the rpi is broken..

@DanC_1987 You need to install the ds4drv ps4 driver still.

      https://pypi.python.org/pypi/ds4drv

Problem is.. without the driver, it says 1 gamepad detected.. but can't be configured. With the driver, 2 gamepads detected.. it configures in the "main menu" setup, and can then navigate through emulationstation... but then it's unresponsive in games.. "controller not configured" message after starting any game.

I've read that updating all binaries and scripts should fix it, but it didn't. I still have a controller that navigates through emulationstation, but completely unresponsive in games. Seriously frustrating.
