Just what in the world are the Atari 5200 controls in lr-atari800?

      It doesn't.

Atari 5200 controllers aren't implemented at all. There is no analog input into the system.
If you use something with analog, it's converted to digital first, which is why so many games don't work properly (Super Breakout, Missile Command, etc)

Basically it's an Atari 800 emulator (Which had digital 2600-style joysticks and a keyboard) with some 5200 stuff slapped-on.

If you have a keyboard attached, Numbers work from the keyboard. For instance, LEO in countermeasure is 123.

@mitu Ah I see.. I was always getting confused when I looked at cfg files and saw the # lines, just cos they looked nothing like technical instruction/code to me 😊. Glad I cleared that up...

So for my own reference I could put a # line in saying here are my latest attempts at the control inputs THEN after after that start that actual control inputs (WITHOUT #)?

just use mames gui to set the controls you want for this game. If you do have a five button layout i can tell you how to map it. if you dont have a five button layout best to use the mame internal mapping for this game.

@mitu ok!!! All is perfectly setup. I was doing a bad thing here on the mame´s menu, I thought the button was configured just when I pressed the key in the joypad, but not... I have to press only one time and then wait.

Ok!! alll my problems are solved.

Thanks a lot to all of you.

If you're using a RetroArch based emulator core, then yes - you can add overrides individually per game - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroArch-Configuration/#config-hierarchy.
It can also be done for specific MAME emulators (Advmame for instance), which support input overrides per-game.

@ciderman As a workaround, you could make a dedicated control panel and wire the microswitches of its second stick to the connectors for the respective buttons of the first stick.

Check the dip switches. You may be able to control the coin chutes. That's something I've seen often in the test/mame menu. This solution would be per ROM though, not per core.

@arduinoGamepad Emulationstation is using SDL's joystick sub-system to handle joysticks, my guess it's not detected as such. There's a similar sdl-jstest utility -which is similar to jstest - that tests whether the joystick is detected by SDL.

To get it detected by ES, try one of these - in order

add a local udev rule to force the device to appear as a joystick: SUBSYSTEM=="input", ATTRS{idVendor}=="<VID>", ATTRS{idProduct}=="<PID>" ENV{ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK}="1"

substituting VID and PID with the values you get for your controller from running lsusb.

Use Xboxdrv to make your device be seen as an Xbox driver.

It depends on the emulator. If it's a Libretro RetroArch core you can use Core remapping and save a game remap file. If you're using a MAME based emulator, you press Tab to open the menu and configure the Inputs for that particular game. In RetroArch's case, the input configuration in Emulationstation would produce a general mapping which is good enough for most games.

@ddallman said in Player 1 START button not working IN GAME - CPS1:

      What could be the deal?

If the start button works everywhere except the cps1 games, i would expect the issue to be in mame2003's cps1 emulation ? However i don't think you'll get support for this emulator, using mame2003-plus or FBNeo is highly recommended nowaday. Also, FBNeo is supposed to provide the best experience with cps1/cps2 in terms of accuracy and input lag.
