I don't know if it's possible during the game, but it's such a great idea when the screensaver is displaying videos. I tried to set up once but failed, I only have now some blank images...

    @pjft
Thank you for this, I found that disabling overscan solved the problem!

@analoghero Not at all, please. :) that has indeed been requested quite a few times, and now that the image screensaver does exactly that - albeit with images - it could be a potential change to how it works.

Maybe it gets picked it up some day.

    Glad you're sorted!

@sirhenrythe5th No, not at all! "Navigation Sounds" does indeed suggest what you understood.

I'm not fully sure why that would be related, but in that case maybe that option could be renamed. :)

    Thanks!

@capeman hey handsome and intelligent EmulationStation user! :)

That request in regards to the video screensaver is noted. I think others (maybe even you!) had requested something to that effect in the past and I tried to look into that but didn't find a way to make it happen.

I may take another look at the in the future, no promises about any timeline though. But thanks.

The other request, I'm not sure the creator of that screensaver visits the forums so if you get no traction here I'd encourage you to post about it on GitHub. :)

    Have a great weekend!

I think this is a good idea, though not one to be taken lightly. Refactorings and cleanups are often double-edged swords, and while I am always supportive of investing time in such endeavors, I fear that we may introduce new bugs and/or remove code that was put there for a reason, even though it might not be at all apparent.

If the scope is more or less well defined upfront (i.e. if we determine that we will look into the screensaver code, or something more), I'm fine with that.

I'm not sure this needs to necessarily be a cross-coordinated effort, though - these efforts are always welcome as long as they're well tested, I believe.

There are a few things on my plate that I'd like to look into, ES-wise, that don't fall into the "new developments" area but rather in the "fixing/improvements" area, namely (in no particular order):

Document OMX and collections features, namely Predictive Profile (High 4:4:4) not working [EASY-ISH] Address textures defaulting to white after returning from an emulator. [MEDIUM?] Improve texture cache to reduce texture pop-in. [MEDIUM?] Fix or mitigate VRAM handling, especially on out-of-memory scenarios. [MEDIUM?] Try to get rid of the two video player options, but rather have a default hardware accelerated player for the Pi that works as intended (i.e. respects the actual layers, rather than being a separate process). [HARD]

I honestly have no idea how to go about several of these, but I secretly hope that with a proper Windows and VS debugging environment I'd be able to make some progress here.

    Thanks for starting this.

@detron thanks! You can change when the caption shows - during the entire clip or just beginning and end - in the video screensaver options menu.

You can also launch it directly by pressing start while the clip is showing ;)

@cyperghost It's good that it's getting this attention, and with the new screenshot-based screensaver, it might be that someone develops that same approach for videos. I believe that'd be the right approach, so fingers crossed :)

@hurricanefan Sweet. I don't have any video snaps loaded currently and it doesn't look like the video one supports a custom directory but the image one is exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

Edit: I realize this isn't really a support question. I apologize and will post in the correct forum next time.

@Hex If that is so, then great that's exactly what I wanted to hear. Indeed, most of my videos work perfectly fine, only a mere fraction make a black screen. I guess this issue will be put on the back burner for now.

Finally about the video audio, I found it in the audio settings (I think it was there all along..!). But might be nitpicky, but I wish there was a way to enable video sounds in the ES menu, but remove it in the screensaver. Really though, at this point, the option that is already there satisfies my needs for the most part.

Thanks, Hex, you were very helpful. :)

Spent hours and learned the hard way that you can't add it to the retropie/gamelist.xml anymore in 2.7.5
But you can add it to any other system gamelist.xml that has roms
Really needs a default folder as an option but for now just add the tag to any of your system gamelists

I don't use videos in ES because of the extreme heat
But I link 5 videos without names/paths to be discovered by the random video screensaver by simply adding it to the bottom of the nes/gamelist.xml file

    <gameList> <game><video>/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/ss1.mp4</video></game> <game><video>/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/ss2.mp4</video></game> <game><video>/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/ss3.mp4</video></game> <game><video>/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/ss4.mp4</video></game> <game><video>/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/ss5.mp4</video></game> .... </gameList>

Works perfect every time and oddly don't overheat the pi while playing.

@analoghero It's an old binary but you can add videotags to gamelist for exp. in RetroPie gamelist menu and it will display any video without being linked to a ROM
So this method works as it should
But you are totally right ... a dedicated folder just for videos would be great!

@TMNTturtlguy Thanks - same wishes to you, especially with no power at the moment.

Yeah, I can't wait for the first bug reports to start coming up... :P

I should actually start a page in the documentation for Video Players and the Random Game Screensaver as well. That should save quite a bit.

One more thing for my to do list.

@pjft thanks! I did do the audio changes through the retropie menus in ES, no luck there. I will continue to test on that TV, but now I know it is a tv issue, it will be a low priority.

The theme is coming along well! I have an update planned for this evening when I get a chance. I have it in 16:9 format now. Some nice improvements and some slight modifications that aren't as nice as the original 4:3, but it looks nice and is running more smoothly.

Another benefit I found with the OMX player is that omx will hold the original format of videos, while vlc won't. Running the ES build with screenscaver we can't use maxSize but it doesn't matter, omx holds the ratio by default. Vlc will stretch the videos.

@ferhound is it hard to understand that you're asking about something that's completely not related to the topic at hand, which dates back from 2017, and try people are trying to help you based on what you initially stated ("when is this available") where you clearly didn't understand what the topic was about, and yet still expect people to have an answer for something that doesn't exist in RetroPie?

Tone was not exactly deliberate, but really: @mitu is trying to help and so was I. If you don't do your homework or participate in a clearer manner, it's hard to help you better.

You resurrected this topic, the answer you got relates to it. Don't expect that RetroPie users necessarily know what new features other projects have, so you will have to explain in more detail on occasion if you'd want to be effective at interacting here over non-RetroPie-specific topics. Not because we have anything against other projects, it's really that not a lot of people actually actively follow other very similar projects.

Long story short: that feature as you described isn't available on RetroPie. If you do have documentation or links about it, though, and would want to share, I'm certainly curious about how they do it. It does look nice from your description.

    Best.

@blanka because you provided none of the requested information. It doesn't say to ignore it and decide when you think it's relevant to provide it.
